DC's new Catwoman series, featuring a revamp of this Batman villain by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Cooke, has drawn a lot of favorable attention from comics fans. Here, Cooke acts as both writer and artist on a prequel to the new series. Out of money and presumed dead, Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) returns to Gotham City and sets up a daring robbery from the mob-a caper that puts her in touch with her pre-Catwoman past but that doesn't turn out as she intended. Cooke blends the Batman cartoon's style with an edgier sensibility, creating a book with definite crossover appeal to adults and teens. The story's theme of broken trust packs a punch that will keep the reader involved. The trade paperback Catwoman: The Dark End of the Street collects the early issues of the new series, and some events overlap with this volume. While some books in DC's line of $24.95 hardcover graphic novels don't live up to the price, this one is worth it. Recommended, especially for fans of urban superheroes such as Marvel's Daredevil and, of course, Batman.

A good read...!

This is an entertaining, intelligently written, fast-paced comic, featuring the return of The Catwoman after a self-imposed retirement. The book gives some of her back-story, introducing James Stark, the man who helped train her as a thief, and also includes a side plot with detective Slam Bradley, which intersects with the storyline in the "Catwoman" series written by Ed Brubaker. (The crossover doesn't quite jive with what's going on in that book, where Catwoman has basically gone straight, and has taken Slam in as part of her Scooby gang, but it's okay: Bradley is a great character, and it's nice to see him here as well...)

Writer/artist Darwyn Cooke is one of the best storytellers working in comics these days, and this is another fine offering by him... just wish there were more books like it! Recommended.

A Blend of Heist and Noir

This is a story about a heist that involves Selina Kyle and not her alter-ego catwoman. She comes out of a "deadly" retirement to make a big heist happen with one of her mentors going by the name of Stark. The book focuses really on this relationship between the two as well as other people involved in the heist.The characters all have their moments in the spotlight giving their very own narations. Selina uses this as big return to Gotham while also going back to her own roots as thief. You don't get the costumes very much in this, but there's some pretty good references planted around. The art itself gives off a feeling of 100 bullets which is quite appropriate with these particular characters and the settings throughout the book. So if you like heist and you like 100 bullets you will really enjoy this.

Fun, fast-paced read. This is my first Catwoman comic, so I enjoyed getting to know her outside of movies. But I was a little disappointed that she spent most of the story as Selina, and I didn't get to see much of Catwoman.

A good Noir novel but only partially Catwoman

I really liked this graphic novel but I enjoy noir detective and mystery fiction. If you however are more into costume superheroine action - well Catwoman is out of costume more often than in and the action (and there is a lot of it) tends to be more realistic than the norm in a Batman story. This is a good read with interesting art and design by Cooke but also is a distinctively non traditional DC superheroine novel.

Homage to Richard Stark (spoilerless, softcover review)

Richard Stark is arguably the most succesful author of crime-noir novels of all time, most famous for the Butcher's Moon: A Parker Novel series. His influence also extended into movies with screenplays ( The Grifters ) and adaptations ( Payback - Straight Up - The Director's Cut [Blu-ray ]). Thanks to Darwyn Cooke, he also managed to get into a comic book prior to his death in 2008.

Stark is indeed here, or at least the embodiment of him, in this first and foremost "Catwoman" (of Batman fame) graphic novel. I backed into this while trying to find more of Cooke's more recent work Parker: The Score . You won't find any caped super-heroes flying through the air in this, but the chief protagonist, Catwoman's alter-ego Selina Kyle, has a couple small costumed appearances. The other main character is a dark anti-hero who only goes by the name of "Stark", who serves as Selina's half-trusted partner in crime and former lover. Cooke may have dedicated the book "for Candis", but everything about this graphic novel screams as an homage to the real Richard Stark.

The storyline is a straight up generic crime noir tale (perhaps too generic), that contains fairly predictable twists and turns that have been part of the genre since its heyday. For that reason I would not characterize the plot as anything more than average, and as it concludes it suffers a little bit from trying to draw from dozens of previous noir efforts and rolling them all into one big shindig. This may be the "Big Score", but sometimes less is more.

It also is hurt (for me at least) by the mild super-hero intrusions into the story line. That may not be a valid criticism however, as this is supposed to be a Catwoman book. His 2008 work was also just a twinkle in his eye when "Big Score" was published in 2002, and Cooke also might have had a hard time getting the project greenlighted at that time as a straight-up noir. He was more likely just trying to prove that yes indeed, you can do a true crime noir "comic book", and he had to build this bridge first. From that standpoint the book is a resounding success, and set the stage for a lot of other subsequent material. It just wasn't individually what I was hoping for at the time.

The art here is of course excellent, and Cooke is a visual master who if anything suffers from being a victim of his own success. Even "average" Cooke is better than 99% of what else is out there, and is pefectly suited for these type of retro-a-go-go crime tales. This is in full color, and for those who like Cooke's visual atmospheric style of a hard luck tough as nails noir world you really can't get it anywhere else.

Despite being overly generic and its mild super-hero references, "Selina's Big Score" is elevated by this artwork and would probably still get a 4-star ranking if it were not for how it pales in comparison storyline wise to his current work. With that being said, I'm still very pleased I picked this up and I'm guessing that any Darwyn fan will be as well if they're willing to adjust their expectations a bit.

Visually stunning, and for addicted "Cooke-heads" desperately jonesing for their next fix, sometimes that can be more than enough. 96 pages, including an artist's gallery. 3 1/2 stars.

DC street book a noir style gem!!

Selina's Big Score is Darwyn Cooke doing what Darwyn Cooke does: be brilliant. The only combo writer/artist who can pull off noir books in a superhero world. Now this isn't his best work but its really good. The art is all little rougher than his current work but it was still phenomenal. Seeing the various aspects of a job being planned and executed plus things from Selina's past made this book a treat. Don't miss this!
