Long time friends turned lovers: this is the heart of Caught in the Middle. While it sounds simple, Barker’s delivery is anything but. Instead, it's an erotic tale packed with emotional surprises and plenty of plot. Oh, and there’s the bonus twist of there being not two, but three parties involved in said transitioning relationship.

When Erin lets down her walls after a particularly trying week of residency, she finds herself caught between two very different, but lovable, men: Simon and Jack. It doesn’t take Erin long to realize that both can offer her something she wants, and needs.

With Jack she has a past; years of friendship has resulted in them learning each other to the core and building a trust and respect that can only be gained with time. But Simon is her present as he begins introducing her to the finer points of BDSM, letting her into his secret world. She thrives on the therapeutic outlet it becomes in dealing with her struggles as a young, single woman, pulling long hours~and paying off enormous debts~in pursuit of her medical career.

What starts as a frolic of physical release quickly escalates, blurring lines. Erin is unprepared when her need and respect of the two men shifts, and romantic feelings begin creeping in . . . for both Simon and Jack.

With so many nuances and lifestyle adjustments, bumps in the road are expected, but I was floored with how smooth, how seamlessly the story shifted between scenes and moved forward. Well-written and well-edited, always a plus in my book, Caught in the Middle had me laughing, getting angry, longing for my own session, and even crying.

This story has it all. It portrays the BDSM lifestyle with class and grace, yet has no shortage of gratuitous sex for the erotica lover.

I simply loved, loved the story big time! I'm a sap for stories in the genre from best friends to lovers and Kira Barker has done justice to it, big time! All her characters are both lovable and frustrating, intelligent but also dumm as hell because they don't seem to understand what they have just in front of them. There's the workaholic Erin whose home is more the hospital than the bedroom and whose mind and body need some unwinding in the form of kinky sex. Then there's the intellectual writer Simon who has been into BDSM for quite a while now and who is more than happy to help Erin in her sexual frustration. Then there's the witty, lovable, best friend Jack who teases both of them with his perfect body and tattoos and who has always been Erin's rock. These favourite three of mine have a couple of hot, hot, hot afternoons. Then Erin starts a sub relationship to Simon until everything goes to hell. Relationships are complicated, that's a fact, and when true feelings and non-communicative characters are involved, you get a soup that is about to boil over, until it does.
Yes, this is a love story with a capital L. Is it a common one? Not so sure. Is it a beautiful one? Hell yes! You will get teary-eyed or you will cry, but those tears are just the beginning in the story -a start for something good, sexy and beautiful.
Kira Barker knows her sex scenes and the world of BDSM. She also knows that love and sex are raw, so why should you sugar-coat speaking about them? She writes very good dialogue and situational comedy that give you some good laughs. She writes strong female characters and has her way with words. Sentences such as "I'm not just in love with you." or "Yet." are so meaningful in this story that why don't you buy it to yourself to find out what they mean in it!

This book was a blog recommendation, but it was not for me. The writer is very (in my opinion, overly) descriptive with setting a 'scene' and explaining what is happening, especially the sex scenes which are plentiful and after 40% of the book, started to get boring. There was not much of a plot other than the sex, which was disappointing, as I bought the book based on the first two "Closer Look" chapters which had a playful banter between long-time friends. If you are reading for the sex only (most often between MF after the first MFM romp) and you like S&M, this is one that may appeal-- but I struggled after the first half. Got bored really fast with all Simon's 'lists' for her boundaries. Not for me- this was hard to finish.

Oh my where to begin? Kira introduces to Erin, Jack and Simon in a very unconventional way, but it does hook you from the start and you just have to read on to get more info on these three. Erin needs something new in her life to balance out her self from work and normal day to day activities. Enter bff Jack and his room mate Simon, what starts out as a a fun little three some turns into something more. This does how ever answer the question of when the line a friendship to friends with benefits get crossed is there a way to move forward without causing and heartbreak on all fronts. And Kira answer's it wonderfully in this story. Cant wait to read the next installment, awesome job Kira :)

Friends to lovers is one of my favorite romance tropes along with second chance stories. This book, my first by Kira Barker, gave me both and I really enjoyed it.

Erin and Jack have been friends since childhood; Simon came into the picture later during college. Jack has always been there for Erin when life tried to drag her down. Her life as a surgical resident is very demanding and she doesn't have much time for herself much less a relationship so she's constantly feeling unsatisfied sexually.

One night, after a party, Simon lets her know that he and Jack want a three-way with her and also that he is bi and a Dom. Things go pretty well the first time the three of them get together. Next Erin agrees to "playing" with Simon as a submissive - something she's never done before.

This book has a lot of stuff going on, not only the triad's relationship but also that of Jack and Simon. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down until my ereader fell out of my hands when I nodded of in the wee hours of the morning. There is not really a cliffhanger ending; I consider it a HFN. There is a book 2 which I expect to go even deeper into the triad's relationship. I've just started reading it and will post a review when I've finished.
