There was never anything fancy about these New York hardcore pioneers, just the aural equivalent of a swift kick to the nether regions followed by a brass-knuckled rap on the noggin. Then again, that's probably what made Roger Miret & Co. so popular with the testosterone-fueled adolescents that related to the band's might-makes-right approach. The band drew some criticism for its avowedly right-wing political stance--"Shoot His Load" praised subway gunman Bernhard Goetz, while "Public Assistance" knocked those who accepted it--but repeated exposure reveals them to be total misanthropes, rather than antagonists of any specific group. If a feel-good album is what you're looking for, steer clear. But those hankering for a shot of no-frills punk-metal with a side of malice will certainly feel sated. --David Sprague

Victim in Pain is such an awesome hardcore album - The title track, Blind Justice, Last Warning, Power, Society Sucker, Your Mistake - all are incredible hardcore songs - that gives this disk 5 stars. Cause for Alarm is more metal oriented and is a good album, but would only rate 3 or 4 stars in my opinion. I don't blame Agnostic Front for experimenting in a more metal oriented sphere - that was a far more viable direction to go as far as any type of commercial success. This disk should have put Victim in Pain first, followed by Cause- that's my only minor complaint. Very pleased overall. I do wish some of the songs were longer in time - the song "Victim in Pain" is terrific, just so short in duration.
(EDIT: As much as I like BLACK FLAG, Ginn's playong was sloppy as best. Whether this was intentional or not we'll never know, bu the fact is that he WAS sloppy! Even Johnny Ramone played with much more technique than Gregg Ginn! Nuff said.),
Dr. Know, Lyle Preslar, Greg Hetson, Doyle, East Bay Ray...et al...none of these guitarists were paricularly outstanding, but they SERVED a purpose and that purpose was to make over the top guitar mayhem for their respective punk bands. So, to review a "PUNK" albums on the merits of a guitar players' particular sound is TOTALLY out of the question, because Stigma's guitar playing on "VICTIM IN PAIN" will not distract you from the sheer pleasure of listening to a seminal punk album. "VICTIM IN PAIN" is raw, fast (sometimes, EXTREMELY fast!!!) and real. "United & Strong", "Power", "Your Mistake" and the thrashing title track make the 2nd half of this CD a MUST HAVE for any HARDCORE PUNK fan. Now, in 1986 AGNOSTIC FRONT released "Cause For Alarm". Cries of "sell out" and "metal posers" where heard abundantly when the album was released (through COMBAT records, a decidedly METAL label, which made matters only worse!). Truth is, CFA is a GREAT album with slight "metal" overtones (but hardcore bands always waltzed the line between punk and metal because of their common musical aggression). The production improved dramatically over the 1st album: crunchy-thrash-metal like guitars, double bass drums and controversial lyrics (some penned by CARNIVORE main man Pete Steele). "Eliminator", "Time Will Come" and the controversial "Public Assistance" are stand out tracks. The sound on this record helped defined the "CROSSOVER" sub-genre: the fusion of punk and metal played at thrash metal/hardcore punk speeds.
If there is anything to complain about is the CD itself. The packaging is BEYOND terrible and does NOT do justice to these two seminal hardcore releases. Like CIRCLE JERKS' "Group Sex" (which is about 15 minutes long and got a full CD release), "Victim In Pain" should have been released separately (and with ORIGINAL cover!). Same goes for CAUSE FOR ALARM. Whoever though of releasing this CD the way it is should be SHOT in the head. Unfortunately, it's the only way you can get your hands on these 2 punk masterpieces!
Victim In Pain is AF's first album, recorded in 1984. To put it bluntly, it stinks. Don't let the 20/20 hindsight nostalgia or street-cred pose fool you. The main problem is Vinnie Stigma's so called guitar playing. He is (or at least was at the time) quite possibly the worst guitarist ever recorded. The weak production might also have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. The guitar playing is so incredibly bad that I honestly can't tell if the production is a factor or not. I know one of the tenets of punk is that you don't have to be Eddie Van Halen or Neil Peart to play it, but damn. It wouldn't hurt to have at least SOME ability. Tuning your guitar doesn't make you a poseur.
Cause For Alarm is their second album, recorded in 1986. For this album, AF basically hired a guitarist (Alex Kinon, who, along with bassist Rob Kabula, was formerly a member of the band Cause For Alarm) and a drummer (Louie from Carnivore) for the recording sessions. They also hired Peter Steel (also from Carnivore, years later he formed Type O Negative) to do some song writing. Thanks to this team of hired guns, Cause For Alarm sounds like a completely different band. A much, much better band, to be precise. Cause For Alarm is the one real standout album in AF's discography. It has a style all its own: very hard hitting speedmetal, bursting with catchy riffs and sharp musicianship. Actually, several of the tracks on this record are pure hardcore and not metal at all... but they're played so well they they fit right in with the metallic material. Perhaps Mr. Stigma was excused from the recording sessions. As for Roger's vocals, to me it's always sounded like Cause For Alarm was the only album where he was "trying." His style amounts to essentially shouting the lyrics, but he does it a bit differently on this record. He sounds less constipated and more soulful. Unfortunately, after this album they returned to the typical "NYHC" sound. None of their later albums ever appealed to me as much as this one. It's like this was the one moment AF did something bold and different, something that stood out from the crowd... but afterwards they went back to blending in with the rest of the scene.
It hardly needs mentioning, but obviously my 5 star rating applies to Cause For Alarm only. Victim In Pain: 1 star.
*** EDIT- "Gregg Ginn, [Kyle Toucher,] Lyle Preslar, Greg Hetson, Doyle, East Bay Ray...et al...none of these guitarists were paricularly outstanding" Ernesto, Mexico
I beg to differ. Greg Ginn is the Jimi Hendrix of hardcore, one of the most skilled and innovative guitarists of the last 30 years. As for the others, though none of them are even close to virtuoso, they all have skill and ability far beyond Stigma. (With the possible exception of Doyle from the Misfits, he's only a step or two above Stigma. But with Glenn Danzig's catchy-as-hell song writing behind him, it simply didn't matter.) They played hard and fast, but they had chops. All Stigma had was pure slop. So up yours, Ernesto. Un vergaso para tu frente. =P
