Real-Time Account of How Government Caused Equity Crash & Depression

Long out of print, this was the first book (1932) to contend that the equity-price crash of 1929 and the Great Depression were caused not by Wall Street "greed" or by free markets but by government interventions, especially the Fed's manipulation of money and credit. Not until 1963 did Milton Friedman draw a similar conclusion (in his "Monetary History of the United States). Unfortunately, Harwood's account was ignored at the time (except by his grateful clients at AIER) and soon thereafter eclipsed by the "demand deficiency" myths of Lord Keynes (in his "General Theory," 1936). Harwood's book is well worth a re-visit and careful study. It's a solid supplement to the related works of Mises, Hayek, and Hazlitt. What's the relevance? The political manipulation of money and credit persists to this day and still causes sub-far financial-economic performance and periodic crises, even as it facilitates low-cost fiscal profligacy - and Keynesian myths have won an unjustified revival. The lesson hasn't been learned - i.e., that government intervention doesn't "smooth" the business cycle or "fix" crises but causes them - but this book can help you learn it.
