About the Author
Jason McWhirter lives in University Place Washington with his wife, two dogs, and their two cats. He has been teaching history for eighteen years and most of those years were filled with coaching wrestling, soccer, and directing drama plays for his school. When he is not working and hanging out with friends and family, he enjoys working out, wine tasting, traveling, fly fishing, and of course, writing. His love for fantasy started young and many middle school evenings were spent reading late into the night following adventurers as they tested their courage and strength against evil foes. He played dungeons and dragons, video games, anything where he could lose himself in the wonders of another world. This desire and craving to be immersed in worlds of magic and steel where anything is possible drove him to write his first fantasy book, The Cavalier, part one of The Cavalier Trilogy. He hopes to continue to teach and write and maybe one day create literary heroes and their adventures full time.

In Jonas, the author has created a believable character whose strength and goodness are developed convincingly throughout the story. Supporting characters are also intriguing and likable, particularly the craggy, legendary warrior Kiln. Relationships between the characters are realistic and affecting. The story moves at a steady pace with episodes of intense action - sometimes quite violent - erupting periodically. The most prominent aspect of McWhirter's writing talent is in his description. This author has the rare ability to paint a rich mental picture, transporting the reader to the imaginary world of Kraawn through words alone. As I read, I was struck by how easily I imagined each battle, each journey, and each conversation.
The Cavalier represents an excellent debut from Jason McWhirter. Shocking revelations near the end of the story promise an equally engaging and enjoyable read in the forthcoming second book of this trilogy. I look forward to reading more from this promising new author!
This book was an original take on the "coming of age" archetype. It had beautiful pacing and character development (well, of the lead character Jonas, anyway). I very much appreciated that the author took his time in training and building up Jonas to become the hero he eventually becomes. Battle scenes are intense and well executed. The magic system is very simple, but that doesn't detract from the story in any way.
Looking forward to the next book!
