Celebrate Green Perfect Paperback – October 1, 2008
"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. Celebrate Green! is a wake up call and it's a fun, engaging read, jam-packed with hints, how-to's and humor. Whether you' re an old hand at thinking green or a total neophyte, Lynn and Corey will help you understand why your choices are so important and energize you, too. You'll discover simple steps to align your life with a healthy Earth, while deepening the meaning and the joy of your celebrations. -- Frances Moore Lappe, author of Diet for a Small Planet and Getting a Grip: Clarity, Creativity and Courage in a World Gone Mad
For years I thought there had to be something more to eco-friendly parties than newspaper gift wrapping and brown recycled napkins. Corey and Lynn found it and created a green gold mine full of stylish and creative ideas. 'Celebrate Green!' doesn't just give you a way to celebrate. It gives you a reason to celebrate. -- Hannah Keeley, author of Hannah Keeley's Total Mom Makeover: The Six-Week Plan to Completely Transform Your Home, Health, Family and Lifestyle
The green movement can feel overwhelming. We all know we need to make some changes, but where to start? Leave it to two moms to find simple solutions to empower the entire family, young and old, starting with making holidays more about green and less about sugar and overconsumption. I am green with envy that I didn't think of that! Brilliant! --Stacey Kannenberg, author and publisher of Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten! and Let's Get Ready for First Grade!

Thanks to Corey Colwell-Lipson and Lynn Colwell for creating Celebrate Green! This book is filled with hundreds of ideas to make your holidays and celebrations green. Imagine knowing you never have to deal with the above scenario! Their ideas are practical, fun, and inexpensive. They have written a fabulous guide, filled with tips and ideas and humor.
Together this mother and daughter have revealed their secrets to keeping family traditions alive while protecting the planet, where to find the best green gifts, and my personal favorite - how to decorate like a pro without going broke! The next few months are filled with celebrations - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, plus all five of my family members have a birthday between October and January. I'll be using this book's "six essential guidelines" to planning our celebrations! I really enjoyed reading this book. I bookmarked several recipes that I can't wait to try and I really loved all the personal stories tucked into this collection of eco-friendly ideas. The celebrations are not limited to just holidays either. There are great ideas to host green baby showers, weddings and graduations!
This amazing book is, of course, published on recycled paper and a portion of the proceeds from their book sales benefit Treeswing.org and HealthyChild.org. A sticker on the back of the book notes that a tree was planted for this book by Ecolibris.net. These clever ladies even made sure we have a place to write notes in the back of the book. Five stars for Celebrate Green! review copied from [...]
There is a vast amount of information in this book from recipes, environmental facts, websites to visit, and decoration ideas. Basically anything you would find in a regular "ideas for the holidays" book you will find here. And because of this, I think it would be fairly easy for anyone willing to try things a little differently to make small or big steps towards going green with this book.
As far as how the book is laid out I like that it is split up by occasion but also season. The use of bullet points and call outs make it an easy book to flip through and find what you want. The book is printed in green and brown ink. There are graphics and a few pictures but I could have used far far more pictures. Pictures are what will get me to stop on a certain page if I'm not looking for something specific, it draws the eye in. But overall this is a great book that makes going green easy by using baby steps.
The book is divided into five sections.
* Spring: Easter, Earth Day, Mothers' Day, St. Patrick's Day, Arbor Day and Cinco de Mayo
* Summer: Memorial Day, Father's Day, 4th of July and, of course, barbecues
* Fall: Halloween, Rosh Hashana, Diwali, and, my favorite, Thanksgiving
* Winter: Christmas,Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, and Valentine's Day
* Year Round Celebrations: Baby Showers, Graduations, Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Family reunions and Business celebrations.
Tips include ideas for decorating, favors, gifts, recipes, party activities, new traditions, avoiding excess waste and ways to give back and make holidays about helping the Earth and others. Not only do the authors give tips, but they also provide plenty of links (even to our good friend A Toy Garden) so you aren't left struggling to figure out how to make your new Green ideas a reality. And, since Green is about reducing consumption, Green saves money as well.
And, there's lots more in the book. I often find that books on being green recycle the same information, but this book provides an abundance new ideas and resources. It's not about giving up the traditions that we treasure, it's about tweaking them - just a little - so we can celebrate responsibly.
