Editorial Reviews

This exuberant recording is the first holiday CD that Marcus Roberts has released since 1991. Drummer Jason Marsalis has worked with Marcus Roberts since 1994 but this is the first CD released with new bassist Rodney Jordan who joined the group in 2009. The recording includes 15 of Roberts' classic holiday favorites, three of which he plays solo.

Wow, this is amazing. Just listen to "Little Drummer Boy" which is a continuous Ravel like repeating rhythmic figure on the snare drum (mostly) but with cross rhythms by Marcus. It builds and builds to the end where it settles into a 4/4 time finale. The drum figure reminds me of the snare drumming in "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" by Simon and Garfunkel -- very precise all the way through. I couldn't hear any mistakes -- how do they do that? Another really good one is "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" which is SO relaxed -- as if you had all your Christmas presents under the tree and you are having a tall egg nog.

Marcus Roberts is an amazingly talented pianist - either in Jazz or Classical music. I'm so pleased that he has made such brilliant career moves. (He is a graduate of and a current Associate Professor at The College of Music at Florida State University, from which I retired in 2003.)

I purchased this CD for my older daughter and family who live in Germany. Once they received it, they had nothing but rave reviews for the album, the selections and the performances.

I recommend this and all of Marcus's CDs and guarantee that you will not be disappointed!

I heard this album being reviewed on a radio talk show, and just the little bit I heard I know I must purchase this album. From beginning to end this album provides a smooth, classic, and beautiful combination of musicians playing christmas classics, that will set the holiday season off. I highly recommend.

I am touched by the interpretations of these songs. The arrangements shine a refreshing light on these classics and reward you with discovering new elements each time you listen. The sound quality is superb. I live in Belgium, but I could only find this disc on Amazon US. Thank you, and the Marcus Roberts Trio for making this a very special christmas indeed. If you are not into jazz, you might prefer to look for something different. Otherwise do not hesitate to embrace this gem.

Just before Christmas on NPR I heard an interview with Marcus Roberts discussing his latest album, so I had to order it. It did not disappoint in any way! I love Christmas music, but this has the added flair of Marcus Roberts and his wonderful jazz.
