2011 Release. Although it is obviously inspired by European Black Metal, Wolves in the Throne Room create music that is intensely local in its orientation. Certainly, Celestial Lineage is a manifestation of the northwestern landscape, but it also arises out of an underground West Coast tradition formed by successive generations of psychic crusaders: Theosophists, beatniks, the Grateful Dead, Neurosis, the back-to-the-land movement, satanic hippies, tree-spiking anarchist punks. Aaron and Nathan Weaver, the duo behind Wolves in the Throne Room, refract the transcendent and mythic aspects of Emperor and Burzum through this idiosyncratic Cascadian prism. The resulting music invokes a misty dream world. Rain drenched specters looming at the edge of the wood. Echoes from the Astral Plane. Ancient cedar deities robed in moss. a glimpse of a bronze-domed temple among the firs.

Even with her amazing performances, the duo of this earthen worship - Aaron and Nathan Weaver - are the driving soul of this maelstrom of moss and soil. The musicianship is finely crafted, yet loose. One of the things I love about Wolves is that they never over-do the production. Each track calls for it's own level of production and due thanks must go to Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer for allowing the purpose of these sounds to permeate through any given track. It isn't watered down but nor is the mix done in such a way as to lose the intent of it's creators.
"Celestial Lineage" is, however, much more refined than past recordings in terms of cohesion and transition. As is the way of Wolves the tracks flow very organically. The Brothers Weaver, with the assistance of the aforementioned Ms. Kenney, have taken sound and given it form in context. It really is something to behold.
If you are new to Wittr, I'd say this is a band you must start from the beginning with. Pick up "Diadem of 12 Stars" then move forward until you arrive at this masterpiece. Listening to the albums in succession creates a soundtrack of life you will not forget. Make a night of it.
I cannot recommend this album enough. From start to finish it is complete and I that is a rare thing in a scene of me-too's and copy-cat bands. Wolves In The Throne Room are unique and this album lends credence to that definition in all senses.
The vison and the scope of this magnificent album is broad and they certainly infuse the blackness with a deep sense of spirituality and Light. Making this a strangely uplifting experience. Connecting the soul of the listener with deep realms of shamanistic wisdom. No doubt reflecting the outspoken ecological awareness of the band.
A musical masterpiece with a deeper message for any listener with an open mind.
CELESTIAL LINEAGE is roughly similar to TWO HUNTERS from 2007, but better. It shares the same basic sound and structure, featuring Kenney's "goddess" vocals interspersed with black metal vocals. BLACK CASCADE from 2009 stands apart from those two albums in that it has no female vocals. It is also harder-edged, and I find it to be excellent.
I discovered this album following my discovery of Agalloch, and it conveys a similar pantheist/neopagan vision. The Weaver brothers and families practice organic farming on land on the Olympic peninsula and are ready for the collapse of industrial society.
Like Agalloch, I find WITTR to be an inspiration to do all we can to prevent the further destruction of the Earth and all the sentient beings with whom we share it. Unlike Agalloch, WITTR actually *was* created partly out of Earth First! activism, specifically Nathan's experience at an EF! rendezvous in 2002.
