I just received this microscope as an early Father's Day present. I thought it would be fun but really had no idea it would give such great, sharp display on the LCD screen. I haven't bought a micro SD card yet, so haven't experienced the photo taking capabilities. But this surpasses my best expectations right out of the box. Within minutes I was observing a coin in a way I'd never seen one before.

I'm nearing retirement age and had bought a couple inexpensive microscopes over the years. This is the first time my experience matched my pre-purchase imagination. This microscope is very easy to use and whether its used for fun or science, it is quite an addition to my daily entertainment.

Update 7/7/13: I now have a micro sd card and uploaded an image of a yellow blossom from a weed in my yard to customer's images at the top of this page. I'm really pleased with the abilities this microscope has for viewing and capturing the hidden world.

I tried out this microscope but ended up returning it for the Celestron 44202 (which doesn't have a camera). The 5MP InfiniView scope will be perfect for some people's needs. I didn't try the camera but looked very easy to take pictures. Also, the scope is remarkably lightweight and portable -- runs on rechargeable battery and was easy to use straight from the box. There were two main reasons I returned it. First, the images go right onto a screen, so you miss the "magic" of seeing a specimen in 3D with binocular vision. Second, the microscope stage doesnt move much, so you can't look at the surface of a bulky specimen (eg, rock more than half an inch in diameter). Still, this scope would be great for someone interested in photographing coins or insects.

"Our 7-year old twin boys have recently started showing an interest in science so we thought a microscope would help foster their curiosity. Having purchased Celestron products in the past, we decided on the Infiniview LCD Microscope and once again Celestron delivers. It is incredibly easy to set up and use, even for kids. We had the microscope completely set up within five minutes from the time we removed it from the box and within 10 minutes we were practically experts at using it. The kids quickly ran outside and started collecting grass, leaves and sticks to view. We then located a bag of marbles and the kids were amazed by what they were seeing. I was able find a memory card and we were able to capture our findings and load them onto the computer. The LCD screen and the image captures are clear and of high-quality. We will leave the microscope out on the table with the hopes that our kids will be invited to continue exploring and learning. We are very pleased with our purchase and highly recommend this microscope for families."

I bought the celestron digital microscope in order to see tiny insects better than with my "20X" Nikon Fieldscope (a small binocular microscope). As soon as I got the celestron microscope I set it up side-by-side with the fieldscope and looked at aphids, spider mites, and similar insects. I moved the specimen as close to the lens as possible and used the 12Mpix setting and 4x digital zoom. It's obviously difficult to compare the magnification of an object seen on a screen vs. through a microscope lens but I would say that both images had about the same subjective feel in terms of magnification. However, the detail in the fieldscope was much superior to the celestron. I could make out fine hairs and other fine details in the fieldscope that were lost in the image pixel grain in the celestron. Also, the depth of field and the whole depth perception was better with the fieldscope (beyond the fact that it's a binocular device simply the way the focus "rolls off" makes it easier to see depth). Finally the fieldscope does all this with several inches of working distance as opposed to mushing the specimen against the ring lens. I'm not trying to make an A/B comparison but I'd note that the Nikon fieldscope cost 2x the celestron and doesn't take any pictures...

Other than not holding up to a 20x scope the celestron seemed pretty darn good. I'm giving it 3 stars because the 160x magnification claim doesn't hold up to a conventional 20x microscope. I'm sure one can measure 160x somewhere, but at the end of the day if no comparison is offered against traditional optical instruments I find it false advertising. If you're looking at specimens with a 10x hand lens then I believe that the celestron will get you more details (besides other benefits such as capturing photos, of course), but compared to a 20x binocular microscope it looses out. Too bad.

I bought my Celestron Infiniview Microscope on the chance that my 4 year old son would enjoy seeing bugs, leaves and nature in a whole new way. Straight out of the box, I was amazed at the clear, vibrant color image on the LCD. I brought it home to show my son...He pulled a leaf off a spider plant and was amazed looking at the veins on the leaves. (Very good educational moment) He brought me everything he could find to put under magnification. And it was easy for him to carry from room to room (cordless is such a great feature). Soon he will have pictures and videos of fruit seeds, fallen leaves, flower petals, dirt and definitely cicadas. It will provide a whole new world for him to recall. I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to using this Microscope in more teachable moments with my child.
