I'm only giving 1 star because I can't use it! And also for the extremely bad customer service of the company it comes from. Before ordering I checked the nutritional information on their website, and they state that 1/2 a cube is 123 mgs. of sodium. I also checked another website that sells it and got the same info. I then decided to purchase through Amazon because the shipping rates were better. The only downside was, I had to buy 8 boxes--but I figured that would be ok because I would eventually use it. When it arrived, I noticed the sodium content on the box was 192 in half a cube. That's a LOT of difference for someone like me who has to maintain an extremely low sodium diet. To use it for soup, even for 1 person, you'd need a whole cube. Adding in the natural sodium in vegetables, that would be soup I would not be able to eat. I contacted the company (maplegrovefoods.com) 3 times to ask why the discrepancy in sodium content between the label on the product and the website, and never talked to anyone that could answer any questions. The second person I talked to told me to take it up with Amazon. Now that's BAD business!
UPDATE: I started using these bouillon cubes a little chip at a time because of the LISTED sodium content was too high for me, so 1 cube lasted me quite awhile. Then, a few days ago, I made a pot of plain chicken soup for a sick friend. I threw 3 cubes into 3 quarts of water, and it was so salty, even she couldn't eat it, and she doesn't watch her sodium intake like I do so her palate is used to more salty foods. I'm pretty sure it contains a LOT more salt then they claim on their package. I immediately threw out the remaining 7 boxes I had in my cabinet, not expecting the company to have the integrity to take it back, based on the experience I've already had with them.
I love these broth cubes. I love them so much, I gifted them to my mom and aunt, as we're all sensitive to msg and the massive amounts of preservatives in almost every other kind of broth. It works well for cooking rice, soup bases, tomato sauces, country/white/milk gravy and marinades for meats or meat analogues.
I don't use any other kind, this is too perfect and comes at a great price. The flavor is fresh and rich without the tinny aftertaste common in not-from-scratch broths. The only additions I make are for different cuisine types. I add soy sauce and fish sauce for an asian flavor very often in soups.
Not very tasty for Chicken Boullion.cubes. I had to double up on it in order to get any real flavor. It was missing the chicken flavordid someone forget to put it in the pot at the factory?
This is probably my favorite product for making a quick vegetarian broth to add to soups and other dishes. It doesn't appear to be high in sodium either, as many are.
Best vegan bouillion in existence. NO hydrogenated oil, less sodium than most, made with veggies, and DELICIOUS! I'd like to have it sub and save, please. PLEASE!?
