"Cell-Level Healing is a remarkable bridge between conventional cell biology and the far reaches of self and spiritual healing. Dr. Hawkes skillfully combines her solid scientific grounding and experience in mainstream biophysics with personal insights gained from a near-death experience and extensive training in the alternative healing arts. Hawkes beautifully demonstrates how science and spirituality can peacefully coexist and inform each other in beneficial and refreshing ways."
—Dean Radin, PhD, senior scientist, Institute of Noetic Sciences
"Cell-Level Healing is quite simply the whole exciting truth about how and why our consciousness is key to our physical health and well-being."
—Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Mother-Daughter Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause, and Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom
"Cell-Level Healing is a remarkable book. It provides the reader with a poetic and visual text on self-healing and demonstrates how science and spirituality need not be opponents but can serve as allies in the reader's transformation. Dr. Joyce Hawkes has created a delightful user-friendly volume that can be read, savored, and re-read—one that is both simple and profound."
—Stanley Krippner, PhD, Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center, co-editor of Varieties of Anomalous Experience and author of Extraordinary Dreams and How to Work with Them
“Science and spirit are brought together with beauty and discernment in this exquisite book. Joyce Hawkes offers us a vision of healing that truly manages to bridge worlds which only remain separate at our peril. ‘The Bridge from Soul to Cell’ is more than a good metaphor: it links wisdom and science and by doing so opens the way for great healing.”
—James O’Dea, president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences
“Joyce Hawkes blends and makes whole our splintered perceptions of the roles of science and spirit in healing. Her beautiful vision of how cells house the very power of the universe, speaks to a greater understanding and the interconnectedness of the spiritual in the physical. In this broader understanding, Joyce bridges the gulf between the tangible and the intangible. She offers up the potential for self-healing, always waiting within us. Her book is both art and science for healing”
—JoanC. King, PhD, professor emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine, author of the Cellular Wisdom series
“The intrinsic nature of our being is primordially pure, luminous awareness—and mindand body are the unified expression of that reality. Dr. Hawkes’s insightful work brings a depth of scientific knowledge together with the tools for applying that understanding in a way that relieves suffering and promotes spiritual awareness. Cell-Level Healing sheds welcome light on the interdependence of our inner and outer worlds. It provides practical guidance for working with the challenges of illness while supporting our journey of personal transformation.
—Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, founder and president of Nalandabodhi and Nitartha International, author of Wild Awakening

**** four stars for readers at entry level on cell psychology and/or energy healing
** ½ 2.5 stars for practitioners looking for in-depth discussion of cell psychology
I notice Joyce has a new book, Resonance, which may indeed offer more hands-on content of interest to practitioners and advanced students.Resonance: Nine Practices for Harmonious Health and Vitality
More advanced resources for practitioners are mentioned below in this review.
Because in 2014 there are next to no resources about cell-level healing and cell-psychology, I'm grateful when a scientist turns into a healer and then reports on their journey and their insights.
Other books like Joyce's are:
- Hands of Life: Use Your Body's Own Energy Medicine for Healing, Recovery, and Transformation
- Diary of a Medical Intuitive, by Christel Nani Diary of a Medical Intuitive: One Woman's Eye-Opening Journey from No-Nonsense E.R. Nurse to Open-Hearted Healer and Visionary
I recommend these two as well.
Energy Medicine practitioners will find relatively little new content about cell-level healing and cell psychology; but again, I'm grateful for any contribution to the topic.
Joyce's book is carefully and creatively written and edited, so a pleasure to read. Bits and pieces of how to approach and work cell-level healing are surrounded by many case studies, charts, diagrams, client healing stories and inspirational nature photos. Her learnings on ten or so common illnesses are included.
For practitioners wishing deeper insight into the mental-emotional issues driving illness in specific diseases, two books pertain:
- Michael Lincoln's Messages from the Body is unbeatable. My review is posted as well. Messages from the Body: Their Psychological Meaning (The Body's Desk Reference)
- Radical Cell Wellness--Especially for Women! Radical Cell Wellness-- Especially for Women! (Best Practices in Energy Healing System Book 5)
DNA is more spiritual than you learned in school
How cells become sick, short and long versions
How to be the champion of your cells
When you need professional assistance,
A theory of cellular healing
Trauma, how it gets stored and why
Back to Joyce, in chapter three, she shares her original manner of healing was to meditate, charge herself up with healing energy, and "blast" her client with it.
This led to exploring client blockages. "I discovered people who had already done a considerable amount of spiritual or meditative practice were able to receive and use flows of energy [I was sending to them]. Those who were just starting to meditate and awaken spiritually; or, beginning a form of complementary healing, had the most difficulty [receiving and absorbing benefit]."
Joyce accurately observes each person's blocks and obstacles are somewhat unique, unique enuf that generalizing about them is difficult. This is why her book, like many books in the field, is filled with anecdotal stories, case studies, of how individuals got thru to more self-healing.
However Bertrand Babinet in the period 1985-1995 uncovered a pattern to most if not all blocks and obstacles to healing: lack of willingness to heal.
Bertrand's dictum was, "Willingness to heal is the pre-requisite to all healing." I made this the title of a booklet since Bertrand never expanded on this topic in writing.
Bertrand showed me and others that "willingness to heal" was easy to measure with muscle testing. As well, the value of setting a scale of 1-10, ten being optimal; and then, testing and checking for "willingness to heal" in three frequency levels:
- Conscious (neck up),
- Subconscious (collar bone down into digestive organs),
- Unconscious (belly button down to feet.
Joyce shares people who practice meditation, holistic healing and especially inner child work have already begun the work of exploring and uncovering where they are willing and unwilling to heal--and why. The more blocks and obstacles cleared, the more healing energy can flow thru.
Joyce changed her healing method. She now begins by looking for blockages first thing in her sessions. She does this by clairsentient touch. For those unable to do this yet, muscle testing is a practical Plan B and leads to greater clairsentience.
Joyce expresses not only a scientific but also a poetic sensibility: Rumi put words to the mystery of soul and body: "Soul a moving river; Body, the riverbed." Cell-level healing happens at the interface of soul and body.
She also expresses her poetic sensibility in maybe 20 brief visualizations scattered thru the book.
For those wishing animated visualizations, try Adam Dreamhealer's DVD of animated healing visualizations: "Dreamhealer: Visualizations for Self-Empowerment" Reviews of this exist on Amazon.
My own experience is visualizations work; yet if visualizations alone are ineffective, clearing lack of willingness to heal is always an underlying issue.
In Chapter Six: "The cells of a salmon, a Labrador retriever, a statuesque elk and your own body all look exactly alike. ...Even a trained electron microbiologist cannot [differentiate] the inner structure of most cells from a species [one from another]. ...Cell-structure similarity between species is another facet of the oneness we share with all of nature..."
If working with your own cells or the cells of clients is your beat, Joyce suggests three categories of shapes to test thru: "A single animal cell may be round, cubic, columnar, or long and stringy, depending on its location and job."
I also liked her observation: " Cells have an outer membrane [approximately the "brain" in Bruce Lipton terms] to which receptor molecules attach. These sites grab free-floating messenger molecules, such as hormones and help push them inside the cell in order to trigger specific cell activities."
Health Intuitive Bruce Dickson http://www.healingtoolbox.org writes on Best Practices in Energy Medicine and Self-Healing (16 books) available http://www.amazon.com/Bruce-Dickson-MSS/e/B007SNVG46
He supports people with Health Intuitive sessions by phone-Skype, initial gift sessions on request.
Joyce was a molecular biologist and then had a near-death experience and came back with not only her knowledge of how cells work, but with healing abilities. She combined these in her new life as healer.
It is short, concise and to the point. I love it and it's one of my go-to books that I recommend to nearly everyone who conceives of the mind/body connection as vital. I think those who work in the energy healing field will especially appreciate it.
