My kids can't get enough of this book. We bought it when studying the Celts in history class, to get an idea of their culture.
The stories are so fun and interesting. It has a great selection from all the different Celtic traditions: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and even Cornwall. Plus, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and the borders are in the style of genuine illuminated manuscripts, which suits the subject matter perfectly. I love the illustrations so much that I want to go out and buy every single book illustrated by Isabelle Brent now.
I read a customer's review about a different book with the same author and illustrator as this one (Grimm's Fairy Tales), which said it wasn't a book kids would read for themselves and it would sit on the shelf gathering dust. I'm assuming it's just like this one, except with Grimm's Fairy Tales instead of Celtic Fairy Tales, and if so, that is nonsense. My seven-year-old daughter carries this book around with her everywhere. She can't read all the words yet, but I read it aloud to her, and I'm confident within a year or so, she'll be reading it to herself. But even if she can't, she still carries it around to gaze at the pictures. I think this book should be in every child's fairy tale library.
