I really can not figure out why anybody would say anything bad about this book/CD, unless they do not want a million people knowing the same tunes.
There is a very nice surprise I will make you buy the book to find out. It has to do with selecting a flute. Do not go out and buy a flute before you read what Jessica has to say. And until after I have had a chance get what I need to make my modern flute sound Celtic.
These melodies are beautiful. O'Carolan is well represented. Walsh's arrangements and variations are pretty and I enjoy that they're a bit longer than tunes in other books. I'm also a sucker for a tune in a minor key or with a minor progression. There are several in this collection.
Most of the songs lay out a traditional theme followed by one or more variations added by the author. Based on celtic music performances I've heard, this - theme & variations - seems to be the traditional way of performing these songs.
The accompanying CD has better sound and performance quality than one often gets in this kind of thing.
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is just a minor nitpick - I'd like to see at least a few songs scored for duets or trios with some instrumental variations, for example parts for guitar or alto flute (in G).
If you love Celtic music, get this book.

Most of the songs are for advanced players (above level 3), but there are a few slower songs.
The CD is nice to listen to by itself.
