". . . remarkable and stunningly illustrated tarot adaptation. A completely new path into personal divination. For the serious student of shamanism and spiritual wisdom, this is a tradition--and resource--not to be missed."
(
"In my position as editor of SageWoman I get to see a lot of decks; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Only rarely nowadays does one come along that really knocks my socks off; but the Celtic Wisdom Tarot is such a deck. Without a doubt, this is the best new Tarot set I've seen this year--a 'must-have' for lovers of Celtic lore and Tarot enthusiasts alike. Highly recommended."

"Provides extremely in-depth divination - delving into the querent's soul for the truth and honesty of a situation."

These cards are stunning! I just got them today and the minute I opened them, I knew I had something special in my hands! The artwork is beautiful and each card, as I flipped through them, seemed to tell a story of its own. I immediately connected with the rich imagery and Celtic symbolism. Each "suit" is geared toward the four Celtic holidays: Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasa which, to me, is very useful for pathworking through and connecting with the seasons of the year. The cards depict characters from Celtic mythology with background information that is extremely useful for personal pathworking. Ms. Matthews has also provided several, in-depth meditation techniques with which to use the cards in your spiritual workings.

I love the Celtic Wisdom Tarot deck - the images are illustrated in gorgeous, saturated colors and each card is fully explained in the book that comes with the deck. I have found the readings I have done with this deck very helpful - they get right to the heart of the matter. I have probably purchased two to three dozen divinatory decks over the last ten years or so, and this one really stands out both for the intense beauty of the images, and the clear and helpful way the book is written to help you determine the meanings of each card and reading that you do. I highly recommend this deck.

Like most of the books and divination materials by this author, The Celtic Wisdom Tarot is both original in conception and beautifully presented. Not just another deck with how-to manual, Ms. Matthews system can be as simple or complex as the user wishes. Her historical scholarship is apparent, and she presents us with her ususal lyrical and astute approach to the Celtic archetypes. Celtophyles will enjoy her connections between tarot systems and the Ogham tree-language. I've found the deck and her system extraordinarily useful from the very first throws ... lovely!

I love the cards and have found them fairly easy to read. I love how they seem to hold a new meaning everytime you look at them. They are very colorful and have some of the best illustrations I've seen on tarot cards. They contain great detail and the book gives fantastic information on the ancient celtic wisdom of the cards and is an interesting, different way to read.
However, I am unimpressed with the books instruction on reading the cards. It gives ample information on celtic wisdom, care of the cards and how to line them up. It does not give much information on the handling of the cards during a reading or the interpretation of the cards based on the question asked. Not a good choice for beginners, as the book can become somewhat confusing...

These cards are quickly becoming my favorites! They are beautifully illustrated and are quite large to shuffle, but they bring another level to my readings!

Excellent deck. There is a learning curve but they are very intuitive to work with. I think this is the best Tarot type deck I have seen or used. Very easy to use and many new exciting spreads to learn.

Beautiful cards but unrealised concept

I was so excited to receive these cards, particularly now that they are out of print and not widely available. I have had them for just over a week and have been using them daily to get accustomed to them.
Pros:
- The artwork - the main reason I bought these cards- is stunning. I think these are some of the most beautifully illustrated cards I've ever seen.
- The accompanying book provides interesting tales from Celtic folklore, the use of Ogham, and is a nice introduction to the mythology of the Celts.
Neutral:
-All of the major and minor Arcana have been renamed so they do take some extra study before you can start using them.
-The cards are large, so shuffling is taking some getting used to and is not very comfortable. The size is as advertised however so I knew what I was getting into when I made the purchase.
Cons:
- In many, many instances, the myths that are linked to and are illustrated on the cards do not seem to relate at all to traditional card meanings. This issue is mainly to do with the minor arcana. The one card of the major arcana that doesn't seem to ring true is "The Mover" card (The Chariot). The discrepancy between image/card meaning/myth is very pronounced however with the Minor Arcana, for example, "Adventure of Skill" card (7 of wands) and the "courtship of battle" (3 of swords) cards seem totally at odds with the corresponding Celtic myth.
-Additionally, many Celtic characters, such as Epona and Rhiannon, recur on the cards, yet the mythology surrounding them is not presented in any way chronologically, making it hard to discern an overall view of the stories surrounding them or their archetypal significance.
While a lot of thought has gone into the suggested spreads, the artwork, and the inclusion of Ogham, the disconnect between the myths and the meaning of the cards is distractingly pronounced. It is obviously challenging to apply a different mythology to traditional card meanings and have them correspond (although the Mythic Tarot which applies Greek mythology to a Rider-Waite system is largely successful at this), and unfortunately I would say that this deck fails to do it successfully. This deck and book set would have benefitted greatly had the author a) done away with standard divinatory meanings and reinterpreted them according to the Celtic myths she presented or b) had kept the traditional interpretations and written up the Celtic myths separately as an overall look at Celtic archetypes, spirituality and divination.
All in all, these cards are aesthetically beautiful and I do not regret purchasing them, but I think I will use them independently rather than trying to reconcile them with the myths laid out by the author.
