















A centrifugal filter, also called a centrifuge filter, consists of a plastic centrifuge tube and a microporous membrane filtration unit. The filtration unit is a tube that fits inside the centrifuge tube and holds a sample during preparation in a centrifuge. Centrifugal filters are designed for use with fixed-angle rotor or swinging-bucket rotor ultracentrifuges that spin at very high speeds. Capacities range from 0.5mL up to 70mL. The microporous membrane can be made of a variety of materials, including regenerated cellulose for applications with organic solvents or antifoams and low protein loading, or PES (polyethersulfone) for applications with harsh pH conditions and high protein loading. Other common membranes include PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), nylon, and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). A centrifugal filter is used for applications such as DNA extraction, protein concentration, virus purification and concentration, or to filter serum, plasma, and other biological samples.
