TODAY I WAS ABOUT TO MOVE THIS LAMP TO ANOTHER LOCATION AWAY FROM THE DINING ROOM TABLE.
AS I LIFTED IT FROM THE MIDDLE BOWL AREA, THE LAMP COLLAPSED AND THE HURRICAINE GLOBE FLEW OFF AND SMASHED ONTO THE FLOOR.
IF THE LAMP HAD BEEN LIT AND I HAD NOT KEPT MY HANDS ON IT, THE WICK AND BOWL SECTION WOULD HAVE ROLLED ACROSS THE TABLE, SETTING EVERYTHING ON FIRE.
THE TRUTH IS, UPON VERY CLOSE INSPECTION, THE LAMP ACTUALLY WAS MADE IN TWO PIECES AND THE BOWL AREA AND THE BASE WERE GLUED TOGETHER AT THE NARROW AREA WHERE THE BASE BEGINS.
THE GLUE GAVE WAY AND THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN OIL LAMP MADE THIS WAY. IT IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN WITH POSSIBLE DISASTEROUS RESULTS.
I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE COMPANY WHO MAKES THIS BUT WILL CONTINUE TO SEARCH.
Like many of the other reviewers, the base came apart from the pedestal when I picked it up to move it.
Thank goodness it wasn't lit, and I didn't have the top off because it would have caused a lot more damage. The entire pedestal and the hurricane mantle fell to the floor and smashed into pieces. On carpet! Thankfully I was able to catch the bowl before it hit the floor (cat-like reflexes! lol).
I was never able to figure out how the bowl connected to the pedestal (glue? melted together? I have no idea...) because there weren't enough large pieces left to compare.
Do yourself a huge favor, and avoid this lamp at all costs! You'll thank me (and the other reviewers) later!
Also, the wick assembly (gold part) was not fully assembled. The little metal tabs had not been inserted into the slots and the whole thing was wobbly/ready to fall apart. I had to get a tiny screwdriver and force the tabs into the slots, etc. after a quick study of another, properly manufactured wick assembly.
In short, the lamp was a mess when it arrived. Whoever was on the assembly line assuring the quality of this lamp is not someone i'd want working for me.

As with other reviews the base needed to be glued to the base to keep it in place when moving.Published on January 7, 2014 by Gary F.
