From the Author
Remember, there are three parts to the RHCE exam: Server Installation and Network Services Setup, Multiple Choice, and Debug. On the CD, there are two complete sample exams based on what is publicly known about the RHCE exam experience. Also available is an electronic copy of the book. You can get to both the sample exams and the e-book through your favorite Linux graphical Web browser or PDF reader. While the multiple choice test engine can only be installed through Microsoft Windows, that engine does not simulate the environment of the exam, and therefore can be ignored.
If you're serious about passing the RHCE exam, read this book. Practice installing and configuring Red Hat Linux. Work with scenarios that require you to debug a Linux computer. Practice installing and configuring Red Hat Linux network and user services. Practice again with different scenarios, until working with Red Hat Linux is second nature to you.
And finally, good luck!

True, the included CD is aimed at Windows PCs, but it's very easy to access the PDF files on a Linux system as well without using the Windows programs.
I would recommend this book to anyone studying for RHCE.
Having taken the exam and passed in December 2004, this release of the book is a little dated since the format of the exam changed, but the content of the book is still very relevant.
The exam no longer includes multiple choice questions, but is now entirely performance based. There is an updated version of the book which I did not buy, having already had this one for some time. It is not aimed at people who want to be taught everything, but at people with initiative and willing to go out and practice and learn by themselves. The content is still good and is well worth the price to prepare for the exam, or to work through before going on an RH300 (bootcamp) or other RedHat class.
This book appears to still be the best single source for RHCE review, but be aware that is is not nearly enough to get you through the test. It should be considered one resource among many that you will need.
Two of the most difficult topics of RHCE, Bind and Sendmail suffer from this. For example, important Sendmail config files are not mentionned (/etc/mail/access and /etc/mail/local-hostnames). Without configuring those files, your mail system may well not work at all...
The author's explanations are from time to time rather vague, perhaps because he's not too sure about what version 8 will really be.
A few typo mistakes make you lose some time.
On the positive side this book is written in a straightforward style and really focuses on the practical aspects, whith labs you can practice on. It tends to concentrate on the essential, without drowning you under tons of useless commands and switches.
Don't expect to find much theory in this book and don't expect it to bring you some profound & thorough linux knowledges. For this, you will have to rely on other sources.
Outside of the bad questions, the book is excellent for use as a study guide or for reference! I suggest you purchase this book if you are planning on taking the RHCE or even if you are not. It is a great guide for Linux users and administrators. Find another book for practice tests and questions, but get this one to study with.

The style is relaxed and informal, and while this makes the book very readable it can also lead to confusion, with seemingly unrelated topics following on from one another (we jump from mount options to RPM management to run levels in sequential subsections). This is not a major problem, however, as the subsections themselves are succinct and don't go into too much detail where it isn't required.
The main area that lets this book down is quality control. I wouldn't be surprised if the closest this book has come to a proofreader is a cursory spell-check. Picture captions are transposed and duplicated, incorrect commands are given as examples, filenames are mangled and all sorts of other errors are spread throughout the book. This is *unforgivable* in a text designed to put people through an exam, and for this reason alone I would recommend RHCE hopefuls to consider other options before buying a copy.
