He worked at the Sun Microsystems Java Center as a Senior Java Architect, where he has extensive experience creating architectures for Java EE solutions for Fortune 500 companies. He has more than 20 years of experience as a software engineer.

Humphrey Sheil is a lead developer and assessor for the SCEA exam covered in this book. With a background specializing in enterprise architecture and integration in the United States and Europe, he holds a M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Science from University College Dublin. This is a very good guide for the SCEA 5.0 preparation. This doesn't have every detail of the topic but will definitely guide you for the exam and cover all the topics required for exam. After I attended SCEA exam step-1, this is my opinion about this book. if you are a person with 7+ yrs of experience in developing/designing J2EE applications buy this book, use it as guidance and refer to other materials for detail study. You should be able to clear the exam step-1 with one month of sincere preparation putting 3hrs on each day. In addition you can take the practice exam offered by SUN.

I used the first edition of this book to pass the first part of the old SCEA exam.

Then I bought this 2nd edition for the JEE5 exam and it helped me again.

This book is not a complete reference to cover in deep all the objectives of the exam and it doesn't replace the required knowledge that an Architect should know. The author establishes clearly this in the first pages of the book.

Instead, at least for me, it was a good guide to know what to study and what to consider for the 1st part of the exam.

The things I think can be improved could be:
* Adding link references to study the topics in deep,
* Adding more questions (Considering that Mark Cade was one of the creators of the exam)
* Raise the difficulty level of the questions

The book arrived in time. Honestly speaking, I was expecting it to be a very thick book but I was surprised to find it very brief. It is not a very comprehensive book, yet it seems to cover everything that is on exam. I guess, I will also have to do a lot of reading apart from this book. As this book is from examiners, so I expect it will prove to be very useful to give an overview of the exam.

For detailed study on various topics, you will need to refer to other text books as I and most others must have done. I purchased this book with the expectation that it would be a complete study guide for the SCJA exam. Its definitely a good starting point to get a high level overview of the requirements of this exam, but a comprehensive study guide - far from it. Each chapter simply covers a high level overview of an exam requirement and skims over the topics while pointing the reader to the Java Specification for more details. There are some sample questions (5-10 on average) at the end of each chapter, but far from enough to get a good feel for the exam requirements. I would have liked to see a lot more sample questions. Perhaps a downloadable test that could closely mock the 1st level of the Certification (multiple choice). You are better off reviewing the exam guidelines on Oracle's website and referring to the specifications to prepare for the exam.
