Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee is one of the greatest songwriters of her generation, and Cerulean Salt is her finest moment yet. This album has a great mix of quiet acoustic songs and loud guitar-heavy songs, and they flow together seamlessly. The lyrics are pure poetry, and the melodies will stick in your head for days. The record has a timeless sound, but if I had to pigeonhole it, I'd match it with 90s female-fronted "buzz-bin" acts like Fuzzy, the Spinanes, the Breeders, Liz Phair, Belly, etc., except this album is better than all of those artists.

I fell in love with her the first song I heard, and it gets better with every listen. Her lyrics are astounding, her voice is beautiful, and the album is overall one of my favorites of the past year.

I bought American Weekend on the recommendation of All Songs Considered and loved it, but I was a bit worried that what I loved about Waxahatchee would be lost with more production on Cerulean Salt. Happy to report that I was wrong. Great escape record.

Hers is a rural poetry, unhurried and ornate, where things like Dixie cups and jars, trips from coast to coast, uncharted parks at night, red forests and water figure into relationships. She carries over the minimalism from her great debut, and amps it up. What was once only unbearably haunting now has some rhythm too. As for content, people are still damaged.

Last year's "American weekend" was a slow and subtle collection of lo-fi acoustic songs.
It held some real beauties, like "Catfish", "Grass stain" and "Bathtub" and was recorded
at her parents home during a single week in the winter. Pretty poor sound quality couldn't
ruin the impression of a major talent at work.

On "Cerulean Salt" she enlists the help of a three-piece band and the result is an album
with few flaws. The opening five songs make up for a perfect succession of songs, maybe
with "Brother Bryan" as the shiniest among them, and it's not much on it worth skipping.
I think the up-tempo rockers are the weakest tracks. By no means bad songs, they remind
me of another good album; Belly's "Star", but I still think these songs doesn't suit
her as well as the slow ones.

Cat Power is maybe the most obvious reference point here, and it will surprise me if this
doesn't go down especially well with people who have a soft spot for the "Moon Pix" album.
In some ways she can also be likened to Nina Nastasia.

4.5 stars. Beautiful stuff.

Waxahatchee is one of my all time favorite artists. I highly recommend her first album, American Weekend, and her stuff she did with the band P.S. Eliot.

This follow-up to "American Weekend" lives up to the standard set by the debut album. This time with a backing band, all of the key elements from "American Weekend" are here couched in a much broader, more expansive sound. If you liked "American Weekend," you will like this. If you haven't heard Waxahatchee, this is as good a place to start as "American Weekend."

As much as it pains me to give this anything less than five stars(I love this album), the vinyl copy I received was warped. Initially, that didn't seem like a big deal, but when listening to the album for the very first time, a few songs skipped, solely because of the warped record. My record player is brand new and there was no motion and/or other reason for the record to skip. Upon multiple listens, it only skips on the same songs and roughly at the same points of the song. Aside from the physical aspects of buying this on vinyl, and the consequences thereof, I absolutely adore this album!
