Cerwin Vega XD8s Active Studio Subwoofer
When creating the XD8 speaker for desktop and computer applications the goal is to optimize the sound output while keeping the subwoofer enclosure small to integrate easily below your desktop or in a home environment. At the ultra low level, where desktop monitors reach their physical limitations, the XD8s sub offers deep bass extension, allowing each system to go to a new level of performance. Unlike other desktop speaker systems, the Cerwin-Vega! XD Series is built with solid MDF wood enclosures, allowing it to deliver the same quality of bass as much larger home speaker systems. Signal purity must be maintained by using low noise amplifiers that don't disappoint when the volume is set to high. And, if it has the Cerwin Vega name, the bass has to be in-your-face.
If you are looking for extended bass response, high SPL and an optimally designed port for proper low frequency phase alignment and minimal turbulence, the XD8s is your match. In addition to the standard audio input and outputs, a volume knob, versatile crossover and polarity switch can be found at the rear of the sub for aligning its audio to any desktop monitors. A System Remote connection port is also on the sub for use with the included XD8s Remote Control, which allows for easy volume control of the entire system. Featuring a Volume knob and Mute/Bypass switch, it is also outfitted with an audio input jack.
The XD8s fully integrates your entire sound system and outboard accessories with the included desktop remote control. The XD8s has the capability to handle multiple inputs, and you can switch instantly between your computer as a source or other more portable platforms such as iPods, phones and other media players via the 1/8” stereo Auxiliary input.

Only input missing is an optical input- which is a shame because otherwise these speakers would be viable for a home theater setup as well. My old setup also had a ps4 hooked to my monitor with sound output via optical cord to my speakers which is unfortunately not possible with this setup (still possible but would require purchasing an optical to analog converter). This is definately a nitpick as that is not what these speakers were intended for.
Despite the great sound only 4 stars as there is a downside- the length of the cord which connects the two speakers is only about 4 feet long- a hindrance if you have a large monitor or a multiple monitor setup and need to place these on the sides. The speaker documentation refers to this cable as "XD audio cable". Fortunately through some experimentation I have figured out that it is in fact a standard 4 pin molex connector and it is possible to use a 4 pin molex extension cord to increase this length (about $9 for a 1ft extension on amazon)- I hope this helps anyone with the same issue for these otherwise awesome sounding speakers.
Having sent back a set of klipsch promedia 2.1 speakers due to not enough bass, I was able to compare them directly with these cerwin vegas for sound quality and the cerwin vegas are lacking in the tweeter department. High frequency sounds like the tapping of a cymbal (U2 BAD) don't come across as well and the sound in general isn't as clear and defined. They have ok bass by themselves but need to be paired with a powered subwoofer to really make an impact. Visually, they look fantastic with the red speaker surrounds cerwin vega is known for, and the volume knob is lit up with a red surround. The piano black face, metal grills, and subtle radiuses on the corners and edges are worthy of the price tag. The volume control knob annoys me. I get that these are supposed to be paired with the cerwin vega companion subwoofer with it's dedicated volume remote control. On it's own though, the volume control is recessed too far in for my liking, is stiff to turn and because of the stiffness, you need to pinch the knob fairly hard.
For the price, I expected more. These are a good speaker and I will keep them however I don't think they are the best sounding computer speaker available.
Pros: Plays loud (like any good cerwin vega should), looks nice, and appears to be built solidly. The speakers were very well packed, in double boxes from cerwin vega then in a third box from amazon.
Cons: Dull high frequencies, volume control knob.
My primary goal was to get a set of computer speakers with great mid-range: my preference for music is vocals. Secondary goal is for games.
I can't be any happier. For set of $100 desktop computer speakers, these put out great midrange. My Elton John's, Chris Isaak's, Bocelli's sound warm and clear. Very good all around clarity with the instrumental music of the Gypsy Kings. Very impressed.
Love (and not surprised with) the fact that the speaker box is wood (instead of plastic which is common for most computer speakers). I believe that's part of the reason why these sound so good.
Taken into context the type and size of these speakers, the bass response is not bad -- better than I expected. These are one of the few small speakers that has a port for low frequency in the back. More than fine for casual (or slightly more than casual) gaming.
(side note -- very unrealistic to expect great bass from any 2.0 setup...unless you're willing to spend thousands. Even then, you'd still need a dedicated sub)
...and no hiss, pop or hum from these XD3 at all.
Bottom Line: Stellar, and relatively small, computer speakers for $120! Excellent for casual listening of most music genre because of their great midrange.
Packaging - A+
The first thing i noticed when i pulled these beautys out is how heavy they are.
Once u get everything plugged ...you are in for a treat.Love mine.
EXcellent for a $100 bucks.Best in this price range.Great highs and lows.
This has a Bass Boost but i have found i dont need it.No distortion at any level
Very crisp clean sound.Headphones sound great thru the port as well.
The only negative thing i can say about them is the volume knob is very stiff turning
Best $100 bucks i have spent in a long time.
While a lot louder than most speakers this size, they lack clarity in the highs. Some of that has to do with my source being a lowly PC, however my Shure headphones produce more clarity attached to the same output port.
For the price, can you complain?
The one MAJOR problem is the cable bridging the left & right speakers is WAY too short. C'mon man. I'd rather have extra coiled up cable than not enough.
