Format: Audio CD
Cesar Franck's beautiful suite for orchestra and chorus, Psyche, is one of the many outstanding works from classical music's Romantic period which is largely ignored in our current unromantic era. Franck is still fairly well known today for his Symphony in D but, in my opinion, Psyche is his true masterpiece and it is presented complete on this CD.

In the ancient Greek myth Psyche was so beautiful that Eros himself fell in love with her and secretly took her for his bride. In order to keep his identity secret, Eros came to Psyche each night only after dark. But, Psyche's curiosity about her lover caused her to light a candle one night in order to see him and, unfortunately, molten wax from the candle fell on Eros and awakened him. Angry with Psyche, Eros fled and abandoned her. But Psyche's love for Eros was so great that she resolutely sought him widely and eventually found him again and won his forgiveness.

This highly romantic tale inspired the normally staid Cesar Franck to write a gorgeously romantic score unlike anything else he ever composed. Regrettably, this masterpiece of 19th century Romanticism is now largely unknown to classical music lovers If you are one of the few remaining romantics, I beg you to acquire this beautiful CD while it is still available.

Many people may avoid Franck simply because he was part of the Romantic era - a period in music that most today look down upon with disdain. But those who avoid Romantic works are missing out on a beautiful gem that is Franck's 'Psyché', an exquisite, haunting work which never seems to get old no matter how many times I listen to it, and Chandos's recording by Taadaki Otaka is nothing short of sublime. Others may take more of a half-enthusiastic attempt with this work, with its flowering notes and delicate chords that seem as soft and silken as the tops of windswept clouds. But under the right hands (or voices), you are instantly swept away into a peaceful, sensual paradise of dreams, where birds and butterflies flutter and dance on balmy spring breezes.

There's something purely haunting about those angelic voices that do not rip at your eardrums with a violence many other works infusing chorus and orchestra seem to do - there's a heavenly peacefulness, a beauty, and that fleeting yet unforgettable feeling of falling in love that overpowers the music as much as the most wonderful perfume. Franck attained something in music that many other composers have attempted, with varying degrees of success, by capturing the power and beauty of love in song. From the very first notes in 'Le sommeil de Psyché', there is an overpowering sense of romance, seductive and so lovely, that makes you pause, swivel your head, close your eyes to take a surprised breath. Maybe your heart even skips a beat or two as you listen and are pulled in; I know I did the first time I truly encountered 'Psyché' in complete.

This is a rare complete recording of an underlooked yet simply gorgeous gem in music far too many people may snub simply because it was composed in a supposedly staid and boring era. As another reviewer urged, buy or download this CD before it is no longer available!

Cesar Franck was a very radiant spirit sent to earth to bring heavenly sounds to our ears. I don't think I'm exaggerating too much on that. Now a septuagenarian, this suite of music by the gentle French church organist has been dear to my heart since my teen years when I had an early RCA pressing of it on vinyl conducted by the legendary Arturo Toscanini. This recording, complete with chorus and orchestra nearly equals that one in grace and in its ethereal beauty. I enthusiastically recommend this gorgeously played recording.

I had the please of singing Psyche back in the 70s with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The piece has never left my mind-singing/humming strands of it as the years passed. It's nice to have a fully realized version available.
