Editorial Reviews

This time last year we were busy preparing for the release on Big Beat International of Nippon Girls, a collection of female vocalists from Japan. It ended up drawing a very favorable reception, especially from hip young club-goers with a yen for something edgy and different to inspire them on the dance floor. For the first issue to carry our new Ace International logo we stray a little less far from home, hopping just over the channel to France, home of the 1960s yé-yé girl phenomenon.

Comprising 24 tracks by 20 acts - Françoise Hardy, France Gall, Jacqueline Taïeb and the country's top girl group Les Gam's are each represented by two titles - C'est Chic! features many of the premier female stars of Gallic pop, plus a few French-singing non-nationals for good measure.

The majority of the songs here are French compositions, but astute listeners will recognize some others in their English language originals. We Got A Thing That's In The Groove (as popularized by US soul group the Capitols), I'm Going Out With The Girls (Barbara Chandler), Laugh At Me (Sonny Bono), Around And Around We Go (Lonnie Jay & the Jaynes), Tiny Goddess (Nirvana), He's In Town (the Tokens) and The Sha La La Song (Marianne Faithfull) are each given a distinctive French twist.

The compilers are currently immersed in the recordings of the yé-yé girls of Italy and Spain with a view to future Ace International releases. Also in the works is a collection of compositions by fabled songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, from whose vast catalogue Roller Girl by Anna Karina, Laisser Tomber Les Filles by France Gall and Non, A Tous Les Garçons by Michèle Torr are among this set's highlights.

OK, I already wanted Karina's Rollergirl (one of my favorite Gainsbourg compositions); the CD was in my Wish List. I'd also been pining for France Gall's Laisser Tomber Les Filles, and, finally, had to have Francoise Hardy's Je Ne Sais Pas Ce Que Je Veux (which is not included on her Vogue Years CD, unfortunately)! And here all three are together along with some other fantastic ye-ye singers, including Liz Brady, Jacqueline Taieb, Annie Philippe and more. Many of these songs are catchy and easily become favorites to listen to over and over again, such as Laforet's A Demain My Darling and Petula Clark's Donne Moi, while others wriggle in more deeply and take you someplace special...Ria Bartok's Tu La Revois, for example. This is a CD you will enjoy for a long time, and, I hope, after listening to it, you will want to hear more. The ye-ye period was truly a remarkable time with great songs, great singing, and a great sound. Any music lover should search it out and give it a listen. This is a great place to start...or finish.

Absolutely infectious frothy frolicsome songs that will inspire earworm activity everywhere. As a consistent player on my CD tableau, this collection comes highly recommended for promoting happiness, giddiness, and all good things conducive to long life. Definitely worth having, if you want to hear excellent pop music that makes 45 years down the pike sound brand new. All you so-called pop divas out there should give this one a careful listen, because the musical craftsmanship of these pretty ditties is at the level of fine art. The singers, to a one, resonate with talent and verve. And that they're all adorable French girls is an added bonus.

This collection is really stunning. The selection is well done, it's like a little time machine to the France of the swinging 60's, which is one of the best periods in recorded music, in all GENRES and styles of music. Someone said that French is one of the sexiest languages ever. Here's the proof for your ears to judge. Those ladies really were mellow, sweet and powerful, all at once!

Compared to the orchestrations for Brel and Aznavour (reviewed elsewhere) these tend to swallow up the girls voices and are very difficult to understand. But, maybe they were just meant to be background for other activities. Still, some songs are fun.

The first side is great, classic ye-ye, chanson stuff. The second side drifts a little more and has a few american sounding girl group type stuff on it, which is not at all a reason to pick this up, IMO. If you're only going to dip your toe or get one, I'd recommend picking up the second comp Trés Chic instead, which is much more consistently French/chanson/ye-ye.

Great collection of mid sixties French pop songs by various French female artists. I recognized the cut "Laisser Tomber les Filles" sung originally by France Gall, and later reintroduced by the contemporary singer, April March as "Chick Habit" in one of Tarentino's films. Included in the CD is a substantial and informative booklet on all the artist's biography and musical background. I enjoyed the CD so much (24 songs in all), I ordered the second follow up album "Tres Chic!"

Lots of fun listening to this collection of French girl singers from the "Ye-Ye" period of French pop. Among the highlights is the original version of the Chick Habit song you heard on Quentin Tarantino's Deathproof. Much lightweight fun to be had here!

I got this for Father's Day and every song is great! I have an internet radio show on [...] Saturday mornings (Banjo Handtowel's Magic Puppet Show)and I'm always looking for compilation of interesting and upbeat music. This collection is going to get played a lot. Too much fun. Once again Ace Records bring me the stuff from my dreams and puts it in my hand. Tune in and I'm sure you'll hear some of this album.
