That's right...there are five couples in this 300 page story, all in different stages of relationship - and three couples actively engaging in sex. Now, I can get behind a plot revolving around three sisters and their love interests being told simultaneously. But then throw in two other couples on top of it and it got to be a bit much for me. It wasn't complicated to follow along at all, rather the plotline, cohesion, and flow of the story was affected. It became choppy. Just as I was getting involved with one couple, the next chapter we were thrown into another couple's story. I understand secondary characters and their development, especially when they are being set up for sequels. But this particular setup was unlike anything I've read before, and for good reason. It was just all over the place. Focus on one couple, develop a good storyline, and then run with it. It's a formula that works.
At about 75% in, I began skipping pages to get to the "main characters'" story. I began to care less about the other couples. I was getting restless for some conclusion. I will not be reading the other books in this series.
This is obviously a personal preference. The writing on the whole was good. Not too many grammar/typo errors. I think if there had been less guests invited to the party, more world building, and more plot development in regards to the main characters, I would have enjoyed it.
I will admit T. A. Grey’s book, “Take Me,” was my first book of hers. After reading that book, I was instantly hooked. I had to get my hands on more of what she penned. I will be the first to admit, I didn’t like, care and a little afraid of the erotica genre. I had read a couple books in the past and was horrified by what I had read. It was basically like watching a bad hard core porn video. However, Ms. Grey’s books are not like that.
If you’re new to this genre, such as me, then this is a great way to tip toe into a genre that can sometimes be a little rough. (No pun intended) Ms. Grey’s books always have a great story tied to them. The book would be great without the sex, but the reason for reading these books is for, well….the sex! With Ms. Grey, in my opinion, takes into consideration that her main audience will be women. The fact that we all want to be loved and treated as a goddess plus looked at with the burning lust of our partner. The sex in her books aren’t so over the top, but just enough to make you want to keep turning the pages to see what’s going to happen next.
With that all said, in the book, “Chains of Frost,” we are introduced to three sisters, Chloe, Lily and Willow. The girls are devastated by the death of their beloved father, Sir Francis Jeremiah Bellum. Upon his death they find out that in his will, he has indicated that each daughter is to become mates to certain male figures. Shocked that their father hadn’t spoke to them regarding this, his daughters decide to take matters into their own hands.
Chloe is to be delivered to Commander Tyrian en Kulev, the leader of the Atal Warriors. Tyrian has a reputation as a cold hearted leader of demon slayers. Lily is to be delivered to Alpha Lyonis Keelan, leader of the Shapeshifters. Willow is to go Telal Demuzi, a demon. All daughters learn that on their 29th birthday these actions are to be taken place. The problem is Chloe and Lily are twins and their birthdays are two days away.
Not willing to abide to their father’s wishes, the girls hatch what seems to be a great plan. They decide that they will go to the cemetery, say a spell that will hide them from their so-called protectors, and live happily ever after. Only problem is, they unknowingly release the most horrific creature known to man.
After finding their lives in danger, Chloe is injured in her attempts to escape the demon. Coming to her rescue, Tyrian has dispatched his warriors to locate her and bring her to him. Once Chloe recovers from her injuries, something begins to happen to her. Being a succubus, she starts going into her first mating phase. Surrounded by men that would be more than willing to help her through this ordeal, Chloe sets her sights on one man and that’s the cold hearted Tyrian.
Frustrated that he even has to take on this role as a protector, he does what needs to be done, but against his will. (Poor fella) In the time that Chloe is in his castle, she finds that she is deeply attracted to this man. But is she capable of breaking through this cold and tough heart that he is carrying around?
I enjoyed this book for several different reasons. First, the sex scenes were perfect. They give you what you need at that moment in the story, but yearning for more to come. The sex is very tastefully written for what Chloe is experiencing.
The second reason I loved this book was the story about the sisters. They don’t understand why their father has done this to them. They don’t want to be at the mercy of men that are known to be dangerous and have a reputation. The girls want to live a life to where they are free to choose who they are going to be with. Not some stranger that they have only heard stories about.
The bond that the sisters have is great. They are there for each other and will die trying to protect each other. When the sisters went their separate ways, just to survive, made my heart break. You could tell that they needed each other, but they also know that if they don’t want to die, then this is the only option.
I am so looking forward to finding out what happens to Willow in, “Bonds of Fire.” Just looking at the cover leads you to think that this story is going to be really hot and steamy!
