This is the first line of this rich and fascinating story. The Inquisition is coming to an end as colonial Mexico, and 14 year old Marcela grapple with the changes and new freedoms that are coming . As a secret Jew , Marcela has to hide who she is as she becomes powerful with men and with money, and as she discovers the layers and complexities of love between lovers , between friends, between parent and child, and the secret and dangerous love between men. The mythical and powerful figures of Lilith and Jezebel provide depth to the theme of the power and sexuality of women. A great read about a time and place that does not get much exposure in historical fiction- sun drenched Colonial Mexico...thrilling !
A girl with a strong personality and a forthright nature, she meets and misunderstands different men, from that point on. A harmless story on her part, told to entertain her employer’s children, results in her being sent to the rough and tough mining town of Zacatecas, Mexico, where she must fight to find a place for herself.
Marcela decides that her children will never have to endure abandonment, but her resolve is tested when her second husband dies, and both her daughter and her son find themselves in danger.
As I used to live in Texas, part of the pleasure of reading this latest in the Tendrils of the Inquisition series was the attention to the domestic details. I remember hoja santa, the root beer plant, from my own garden, as well as Mexican hot chocolate, a thick, pungent, yet sweet drink.
Author Claudia Long is not only familiar with Mexico’s history, climate, and culinary tradition. She also references role-models, comparing and contrasting Lilith and Esther as inspirations for women.
The “history” is of Jews who were forced to deny their heritage throughout the Inquisition in Mexico during the 17th and 18th centuries, but the concept of “fiction” has faded as the series has moved on from volume to volume.
In the first (“Josefina’s Sin”), Claudia takes us to the land, time and people as a visitor from today. The story, while based upon actual people, was not simply researched- Claudia grew up in Mexico and drew deeply upon her life experiences.
In the second (“The Duel for Consuilo”), she speaks more through her characters.
With “Chains of Silver” Claudia now affixes us solidly inside the minds of her creations- there is no separation.
Claudia’s voice has gained in timbre, resonance, and authenticity, becoming surer and surer with each succeeding reverberation.
And the reader’s experience, enlightenment and enjoyment follows this upward arc.
While not necessary to read in sequence, I would anyway as the latter ones do have backward references. Plus, WHY would you want to miss anything?
I don’t know where Claudia H. Long is going next and I don’t know if her steed is a time machine, a 777, or an Elon Musk Falcon 9, but I know that I’m buying that ticket too!
