from Chalk Ink company:
Unless you have a very hard surface like a porcelain on steel board or a manufactured, baked surface, or a semi-gloss painted surface- you will always have that issue. Chalk paint is very porous and not hard so it is something that will need a regular touch up. It's the nature of the material.
These chalk marker work like old-school paint pens - you shake them up, depress the tip to let the ink flow, and then write with them. Very clean, very tidy, no dust, no smearing.
The downside is that they require a damp cloth (I like my microfiber sponge) to remove. This being said, if you have a very porous chalkboard, or one mounted on porous material (wood, particle board, drywall) it isn't ever going to come out. Hence the way-too-small manufacturer's comment at the bottom of a previous poster's comments about a "hard surface". Read the manufacturer's directions carefully and do *not* try and use these unless you're sure you have a compatible chalkboard! Sacrifice a test corner if you're not sure. My chalkboard is fused to a sheet of metal - about as non-porous as you can get. And so far the chalk pens have come off just fine.
I do really like them, but since the chiseled tip breaks down quickly (at least under my kids' hands) and they're fairly expensive for the amount of ink they hold, I can't give them a five star rating. I'm currently considering mounting another magnetic chalkboard panel elsewhere in the house, just for the kids to use, and I'll probably just give them regular chalk to use - it's cheaper and easier to clean. As for me? I'll keep the liquid chalk for myself ;-)
The colors are bright and readable save the blue and green, they don't show up as well on the black back ground.
We change our chalk boards on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, so sometimes we have to use a cleaner on the painted walls to get everything off but nothing is ever permanent.
For those of you wondering how we painted our wall to avoid permanent staining, here were our steps.
To prep our walls we put down a solid base coat of primer. Over the course of a few days we layered on 2-5 coats of paint (depending on how long we were going to leave the pain on, more coats for longer). We waited the prescribed amount of time before using the boards which was around 2 days I believe.
The most important step we do, which some might find an inconvenience, is we but down a layer of "regular" chalk first, then wipe it off of the painted board. This is following the directions on the back of our chalk board paint can, and I attribute this step to our stain free walls.
