I thoroughly enjoyed this story set in the area where I spent my childhood. The familiar landscape is beautifully described and all the main characters well-developed. I especially liked Gwen and Pauline; completely opposite personalities, both very believable; one emotionally cold, the other warm and gregarious. The deprivations and losses of the War changed the course of many lives, highlighting the courage of the women who stayed at home, like Gwen and Pauline, as well as the men who fought the battles. Children who were uprooted, due to evacuation or the bombing of their homes, like Sally and Brenda, frequently grew up without parents or in strange surroundings. It was a time of great uncertainty and fear.
This story is written from the point of view of the women who endured the absence of their husbands, or lovers, never knowing whether they would return. These women developed newfound independence and kept the "home fires burning" for the duration of the war.
The Chalky Sea is a different war story; centered on the quiet strength of the women rather than the
fury of the battles. My only criticism,- I found the ending rather abrupt. I should love to know what happened to the young Canadian, Jim. (Perhaps a sequel?)
A very engaging read. Recommended.
