This well-researched biography covers extensively Mary, Queen of Scots' reign, from her birth in 1542, to her abdication in 1567. The author makes great use of genealogy ( of Scottish noble families), character analysis of the major players in Mary's story, as well the small, intricate details of her every day life. This first volume, makes an interesting and enjoyable read, especially if you are interested in the Tudor and Stuart eras of British history.
This well written book is a valuable addition to the extensive bibliography on one of the most intriguing characters in the history of the British Isles. It has clearly been extensively researched and the numerous quotes from the sources are often accompanied by useful additional comments. The author's own views on Mary in the last few pages are well worth waiting for! Pertinent, succinct, elegantly expressed and riveting. I thoroughly recommend this book which I much enjoyed reading while learning a great deal about the detail of this most interesting period in the history of Scotland and of the relationship with England.
