Eric Ewazen is composer-in-residence with the Orchestra of St. Lukes and a faculty member at The Juilliard School in New York. His music is very popular among brass players and his quickly gaining a large audience in the musical world. This disc contains some of his most brilliant works. The performers on the recording are exceptional. This music is appealing to all listeners and has an excitement and unabashed lyricism which is missing in the music of so many other contemporary composers. Wider recognition is truly deserved for this composer and his wonderful music. This recording deserves a listen!

This is a great disc that features four chamber pieces by composer Eric Ewazen (Hence that creative title!). First of all let me say that Ewazen is a rising star among composers especially for brass music. Like the liner notes say Ewazen is lucky among composers because he has "An expanding roster of world class musicians who perform his music." True words. To get open the disc the AMAZING American Brass Quintet performs Frost Fire. A piece, which they commissioned for their 30th anniversary. The piece is filled with great rhythmical movement and beautiful melodies. I particularly like the final movement. The American Brass Quintet is hands down the best classical brass quintet in the nation if not the world. Next on the CD is "..to cast a shadow" a very dramatic song cycle with William Sharpe, baritone, Chris Gekker, trumpet and Colette Valentine, piano. The trumpet introduces a lot of the material and is constantly dancing around as a sort of chorus. Chris Gekker is a marvelous trumpet player (who commissioned this work) and William Sharp gives an amazing reading. The piece itself is very sensual and for text uses poetry by Katherine Gekker (Chris Gekker's sister). Quintet for trumpet and strings is another Gekker commission and truly a vehicle for his automatic technique and beautiful phrasing. Finally the Sonata for horn features the composer at the piano and the stunning playing of Scott Brubaker who is simply amazing. The Sonata for Horn I think is a true masterpiece and is gaining wide recognition for a very fine piece. Overall this CD is a must have for fans of Ewazen and/or fans of brass chamber music. Or any music lover. This is beautiful and accessible modern music.

I first heard Eric Ewazen's Oboe Concerto on the radio. It fascinated me immediately. I obtained that as well as this CD. It's new, original, tonal music. The parallels some poeple have identified with Copland is apt & relevant. The sound is expansive, colorful, with enough contrasts to enchant you for as long as it plays. I admire Ewazen's daring of being himself rather injecting some dissonance for the sake of being modern. He is refreshingly modern, melodic & original. Highly recommened.
