This switch requires a connection for the load (your light bulb(s), a connection for your line (the hot wire in any switch box), and a ground. If connected to the load (red wire) and line (black wire) only, you may get your lights to turn on and off manually, but the switch will not go into 'learn' mode and synch up with your opener. As the instructions indicate, you MUST have a ground wire. Connecting mine (all 3) to the ground I could get it to go into learn mode sporadically. It would work with my opener, then 20 minutes later wouldn't work . I'm no electrician, but I can use google, so I started researching electrical 'ground'. I found from various sites that the voltage when measured across the line (hot/black) wire, and ground should be 120v. I measured my connection and found that it was around 60 volts. Now... the Chamberlain instructions troubleshooting section says that after 10 minutes a blinking 'learn' light indicates a bad ground, or low voltage on the ground. That should have told me something was wrong right off, but it didn't. I had to experiment on my own. I ran a temporary ground from a nearby outlet box and measured the voltage across line and ground and it showed a good 120V. So I hooked up the switch temporarily using the ground from the other box and the switch magically started working right!! I ran a new ground to the box where the switch was to reside and reconnected everything and the switch has been working just fine!
So...when they say it needs a ground, it NEEDS a good ground, not a flakey one. Now.... I've got two switches more than I can use :)
The range though, wow. I was skeptical since the antenna is a 4-5" wire that sits in the box in the wall where you put the switch. I wanted to order a second remote to keep upstairs so when they come in, they don't have to carry the remote in with them to toggle the lights back off. I tested it and it worked all through the house. I got curious then as to how far I'd have to go to make it stop working. The attached photo's yellow dot is the light and the red X is the furthest it would work, lol. About 350 feet, pretty impressive.
