Jileena is the daughter of the second in the government of the coalition of planets. Winslott Industries is known for its care for its employees and those who live where the company mines. Jileena, known as Baby by her doting father, longs to break away from the vacuous blond image she's been framed in. The chance comes when Winslott sends her to negotiate an agreement to mine in a native tribe's area on a planet in the Rim. It's an area of space with renegades, pioneers, and little law enforcement, reminiscent of the old West Sci-Fi style. The only catch... She has to have a fake fiancé - bodyguard, Security Officer Laning Servary.
Laning isn't thrilled with the job. He thinks Baby is a spoiled rich girl who has no business going to the Rim. He's in for a surprise. Baby isn't, she's tough, smart, somewhat reckless and has loved his since she was twelve.
There are characters and references to the characters and events in The Pilot, the first in The Rim series. Read it before this book simply because this on follows and you'll understand the underlying plot which will most likely be resolved in a future novel. I hope so anyway.
As in her other novels, Earth slang and idioms are sprinkled throughout the book, though not as many.
The sexual scenes are few and not as grossly in depth as many other author seem to put it. The story is the focus, not the erotic, very refreshing and easily glanced over.
I highly recommend all of Ms Burton's books.
Jileena Winslott is the chameleon. She has two personas. While she pretends to be “Baby Winslott,”daddy’s dippy, spoiled little rich girl—she is really more like accomplished “Leeva Warren,” who works her way from the bottom up to prove to her father she’s capable of taking over Winslott Industries after the disappearance of her brother.
Security Officer Laning Servary, who resents rich kids, is assigned to be her “fake fiancé” and protector when she travels to the dangerous Outer Rim on a secret mission for Winslott Industries. Jileena’s father promises to return the family farm to the Servarys if he brings her home safely.
Jileena has been in love with Laning for years and through a world of trials and tribulations, obstacles and corporate intrigue, they save each other. This is an intricate, fast-paced novel of many surprises, villains at every turn and difficult choices. Ms. Burton has done an excellent job world-building. I was thoroughly engrossed in the book to the very last page and was rewarded with a fairy-tale ending. A highly-recommended read.
