Raine Wilkins, is struggling to keep herself together, the memories of what she went through a year ago weighed heavy on her heart. Raine believed at the time that the scar she received, that was suppose to be a message for the man she loved was best kept as a secret. She would rather walk away and allow the man she loved to keep living his dreams and reach his goal to be a first place Formula 1 driver. Will having her ex boyfriend's brother as a best friend and her nightmares and panic attacks happening anywhere, will she be able to keep her secrets much longer once he returns home from the UK?
Teo Coates had it all, a beautiful girlfriend that he loved and he is very well known as a race car driver. His girlfriend breaks his heart without any reason why on the night that he has to travel to a race, he decides to get on the plane and not look back. A year later after sleeping with more women that he can count and trying to erase the memory of the woman that he loved, he returns home. Teo never expected to find his ex falling apart right in front of him, she was not the woman that he knew. He wanted answers and he was not going to give up, but will he be able to find out what happened to Raine and stand by her once he discovers the truth?
Chameleon Soul had some suspenseful moments that kept me swiping the page, the fear and breakdowns that Raine suffers are emotional and felt. The passion is intense with Raine and Teo, which had me wanting them to fight for each other. Further into my read, I started to feel the connection with the characters, Mia Hoddell still left some mystery with one of them that left me wanting to grab book 2 in the series ( which I will). I am happy that they could be read as a standalones. 4 star read and the only reason was because it took me a while to connect with Teo and Raine, very good story line though.
Fear is very real and dangerous. It clings to vulnerability and weaknesses, providing the perfect opportunity for everlasting scars. Fear causes us to commit to unintelligible actions based on the unknown or even worse—past experiences. Hoddell shares an amazing fictional story with her readers, encompassing love, pain and fear of a relationship after a traumatic experience. This story is intriguing, compelling and emotionally heart-stopping. By reading the words that Hoddell writes in this first installment of the Chequered Flag Series, readers are able to experience the turmoil that is caused by reliving one painful experience, causing detrimental impact—given the inability to overcome the fear of its re-occurrence.
Raine wakes up in a hospital, thankful that her two best friends are both there to support her. After much debate, it becomes apparent that Raine has been hunted down as a means to target someone else in the process. Raine’s irrational thoughts leave her with one ultimate conclusion—she is in the hospital because of her love for Teo. She has been with Teo for two years, but with his growing success as a racer, her life has been placed in danger. Her resolve is to end the relationship in order to prevent further attacks on her life, also an attempt for Teo’s. If he knew what transpired, landing her in the hospital broken and defenseless, he would never take the opportunity to live the life that he has strived so hard to build. After much debate and countless requests for reconsideration by both friends—Raine sends the text that will end it all…for an entire year.
Hoddell seems to fluently understand the psychological aspect of her characters. It is apparent that a great deal of research has been completed in order to make these characters credible or plausible in a balanced fashion. The ‘friend role’ that Dustin plays is very important in this story; Raine’s reality has completely shattered, but Dustin is piecing her back together as much as possible. Whereas, Dustin has his own inner demons, fighting an emotionally abusive relationship, Raine’s nightmares and her reactions to touch and sound can be closely related to what someone may suffer if diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress. The author is very descriptive in her wording, allowing her characters to become extremely convincing. It would not be difficult to find sympathy for several of these characters along the way.
Not only does the author succeed in character development and originality, she has created an understanding for her readers of what an emotional breakdown and reconstruction consists of. It’s not easy! An entire year of being afraid of the dark, afraid of others, afraid of yourself would be mentally exhausting. Due to the psychological insights and intensity of the story—Hoddell has a compelling novel that will shed some light on what it takes to fight the fear and pain caused by others. If you are a reader of new adult and college, this may interest you. A free copy was exchanged for an honest review of this fictional piece.
I enjoyed how she wrote Raine & Teo's story. Giving us little pieces of their story throughout the book keeping our interest while needing to know more.
My heart broke for Raine. The life she knew was ripped from her and instead of reaching out to Teo she pushed the man she loved away thinking she was saving him. She hid from everyone abd everything except her best friends Dustin and Nadine. No one should have to go through life fearing everything outside the only place they feel safe. Unfortunately in life outside the pages of this book, many people do live in this state of fear. Mia wrote the fear and anxiety Raine was going through in a way that her readers could feel it themselves . I know I did.
Teo wasn't given an option to stand by Raines side. All she told him was she didn't love him anymore . He knew nothing else . He lived the year apart from her in his own pain.
He is back and an accidental run in with Raine opened his eyes enough to make him see that Raine is not the same Raine who left him a year prior and that the change in her is not a good thing.
Will Raine be strong enough to tell Teo the truth? Will Teo be strong enough to not run when he hears the truth? Will they get a second chance, when their first shouldn't have been ripped from them?
