This is not a replacement for Vaseline or body glide! What do I mean?
I have been using chamois butt'r for about 4 years now, and it works great. The only complaint I have had is that the pricing seems to be out of control... this stuff has become super expensive over the last several years. But it really does help on the long rides.
So I hadbeen training for Ironman Cozumel 2015 (first one) and I decided that I would throw small packets of chamois butt'r into my transition bags as a quick fix for chaffing... HUGE MISTAKE! I did this because when you are wet, body glide doesn't really go on easily, and i had never trained with vaseline...which is what a lot of people were using. If you could have seen my face after i applied the chamois butt'r to my already semi-chaffed areas (under my arms, and my inner thighs), you would have thought i was re-enacting the Home Alone scene where Macaulay Culkin slaps after shave on his face. My eyes widen, my "O" face came out, but I was able to hold the scream in. It took a second for the burn to kick in... and took several mins for it to go away. I finished the race, but i will never use chamois butt'r for anything other than on my chamois....
I have used this for 2 rides in the past 10 days of 30+ miles (2.3-3 hours in the saddle) and came away from bith rides feeling wonderful. On an earlier 17 mile ride (2 hours or so in the saddle) I couldn't ride for a couple of days, but now with Chamois Butt'r I don't have that limitation. I may still be too worn out because of muscle exertion, but all I can do there is ride more.
If you have been thinking of using chamois cream, wait no more... Buy some and spread a little on the chamois, and a little on the spots of your body that rests upon the chamois and learn how to enjoy cycling with less of the wrong kind of pain. Save your pain tolerance for the good kind of pain, like when you are torturing your muscles by grinding up a hill. :)
I can easily ride for 2 or 3 hours with no cream. Even then, I find this sooths the minor heat where skin touches skin or skin touches chamois. On Century rides I can get away with just the pre-ride application, but an additional treatment at the half-way point means the pleasure just stays with me till the end. I also appreciate a good coating on long rainy rides. The cream protects all my hidden parts from getting water logged.
I find a dab here and there is plenty, Use too much on a really hot day and your black shorts will have a temporary white "sweat" ring.
My wife almost gave up on cycling before a friend recommended this. What was irritating is now not noticeable. The difference was so outstanding that it was hard to believe the cream was the solution. But a "bare" butt test ride (without cream, but with shorts) showed the cream was the answer.
