I'm using the 3100 watt inverter generator to power my 2016 Rockwood high wall A frame camper. The little camper has a dometic cool cat 10,200 btu A/C and microwave oven in it.
The generator arrived promptly in 2 days, well boxed in good condition. It weighed a lot. Removing it from the box and initial setup was easy with the most difficult task being connecting the internal battery cables. Still it only took 20 minutes to get it running. You'll need a quart of 10w-30 oil for break in.
Using the wireless remote it started almost instantly and settled into a smooth idle. I followed the break-in instructions carefully, using the campers dometic a/c as a load.
The generator easily powered all loads in this little camper. When powering the a/c, the engine would run slightly above idle rpm. Not too loud and very stable. Unlike other rv's, I was able to simultaneously power the microwave, and as expected the rpm would jump way up.
I verified i could remote start the generator with the campers a/c turned on and it would start and carry the loads. The end result being that I can start the generator while on the road and precool the rv prior to a rest stop. It worked perfectly.
After 5 hours I changed the oil with Mobil one and used the generator the next day for hurricane Mattew and it worked perfectly.
As for sound level.
Its not a Honda Eu3000. Not even close. I measured the sound level at 23 feet (7 meters) at 60 Db at idle with the exhaust pointed away from me. As advertised.
It gets plenty louder (worst case 74dba 15 feet @ max power) at the exhaust port side as electrical loads increase do to a muffler that's too small but for the price, this generator is a dandy. I figure it's $1500 less than the Honda when you add in wireless remote and free shipping. More than enough to buy a second unit with $600 leftover. If you need all 2800 watts regularly you might not be happy with this unit as its makes plenty of noise at full power but...
I found when placing the generator near the end of the 25 foot power cord with the exhaust pointed away from the camper, that the generator was inaudible inside the camper with the quiet dometic a/c turned on. Perfect for me.
Summary. Nice quality, first rate customer support, acceptable sound level, great price. Wheels around easily on smooth surfaces, compact size. No regrets.
I have no affiliation with champion, Amazon. Just an end user.
I took the unit out of the box. I removed the battery door, clipped the zip tied cables and connected the battery. I filled the crank case with 6/10 quart of top shelf 10W-30 then turned on the power button. I pushed in the choke button and cranked it using the push button start. It fired right up. It took a few seconds for the idle to stabilize and when it did, I put it into energy saving mode and allowed it to idle down. I let it run for a few hours before I put a load on it. I opted for mid grade fuel vs. the cheaper low octane stuff. I took the unit to the farm and cranked it right up again. I plugged it in, opened the slide to the camper, charged my batteries for a few hours then shut it down. I cranked it up in the mornings to make breakfast, coffee and watch the news then turn it off. I tested the air conditioner, central heat and an electric griddle. All ran without issue and you could hear the Champion idle up only rarely. If you could hear it at all. This thing was barely audible right behind the camper. The noise level was so low that it never interfered with watching television, talking or even hunting. We shot a nice 11 point within rock throwing distance of the Champion. I just can't imagine the Honda being much quieter. Every feature delivered as advertised including the remote. It ran all night on a tank of gas (only charging batteries through the converter in the camper) and absolutely delivered all weekend.
Quiet, quiet, quiet, easy to use, starts and runs very reliably, loaded with options reserved for more expensive units, value priced, has a handle and wheels making moving a snap, handles a rooftop 15000 BTU rooftop A/C, easy setup. 30 amp RV outlet, 110v outlets, USB plug and 12v cigarette lighter adapter for charging car batteries. Comes with special funnel and 12v car adapter with alligator clips. cranks right up on 20 degree mornings. delay that allows you to leave items plugged in when starting (although included guide says not to?)
Heavy, wheels are set deep so you have to pull it at a shallow angle (strap it to a cheap dolly?), small gas tank and panel could be laid out a little better.
Overall I give this unit a 5 star rating. I cannot comment on long term reliability but it does have a 3 year manufacturer warranty and a good amp hour rating as opposed to some other units. If it holds up over time, Champion has created a winner and Honda should seriously reconsider how much market share they are willing to lose to Champion and bring their costs more in line.Thumbs way up. This unit is a keeper!
When under max load running the A/C, the generator uses its fuel tank up in about 2 1/2 hours. At lighter load such as coach battery charging lets it run for as many as 4 hours. The remote start function is nice when it works. If the on board battery is weak, it will not work. Fortunately, hand starting with the pull cord is fairly easy. There is no fuel tank level indicator. Filling the tank is the only way to make sure the tank is full.
If you overload the generator and it automatically trips the internal circuit breaker, the only way to reset it that I could find is to shut the generator off and then restart it. There is no reset button or control device that will reset the 30 amp overload. A re-design should include this feature.
