I did have to wrap duct tape around the middle of it, so that I would have a smooth surface to grip. I could have probably worn a leather glove, but that wouldn't have helped me with the grip. If you don't wear a glove or do something with the middle, it can rub your hand too much and cause irritation. The ergo handle is really not good. But I still gave this 5 stars because as long as you do that, it's perfect. At least it's perfect for my needs.
Overall its not a big deal since I use the weight on carpet (no risk fo breakage) and the grip and surfaces are smooth enough.
Just don't get how this differentiates itself from other weights (along with CAP or SPRI) for marketing.... but really it is just a generic shoddy weight from who knows who...
I suppose I'll get on to the dumbbells themselves. They're pretty standard. Hex which I prefer since I'm always chasing down my adjustable dumbbells. The grip is good. I saw complaints about poor finish and protruding metal pieces to get cut on - I didn't experience this. The quality is good enough that, if I felt like spending the money to switch from adjustable plate dumbbells to a full rack of these, I'd buy this brand.
They're really, really cheaply manufactured. While they serve their purpose for lifting, and the ergonomic grip is nice, the finish chips off of these things the minute you accidentally knock them together (think chest flies, presses of any kind where you meet at the top, etc). At the end of certain workouts there are paint chips all over my floor, which immediately makes me regret not getting the rubber coated versions.
Spend a little extra dough and skip these. They work, yes...but paint chipping in your eye during a chest flye is pretty awful.
