The Champion Power Equipment 100176 12.5-kW Home Standby Generator with an ATS100 Indoor-Rated Automatic Transfer Switch is The Simple Solution to a power outage. Enjoy peace of mind while ensuring security and convenience for your family during an emergency. The generator starts automatically when the power goes out and returns to standby when power is restored. The 24-volt starting system operates in temperatures ranging from -22° F to 104° F with no warming kit necessary. You’ll have the starting power you need during an emergency since the onboard battery charger maintains the charge at all times, plus, since the generator is connected to your propane or natural gas system, it never needs refueling. This unit also performs weekly self-diagnostic tests. An all-weather, composite mounting pad is included for easy installation, plus the steel enclosure protects your generator from the elements. The ATS100 automatic transfer switch operates a 100 amp, 12 circuit load. It is ideal for homeowners who want to power emergency essentials during a power outage as opposed to the whole house. It is housed in a NEMA 1 rated enclosure for indoor use. Our innovative gull-wing design provides easy access to the engine and control panel and allows a full view of the onboard control system. The Champion 717cc OHV engine provides 12.5-kilowatts of continuous power on propane and 11-kilowatts on natural gas. This 12.5-kW-rated unit produces 52.1 amps at 240 volts on propane and 45.8 amps at 240 volts on natural gas. The sound-dampening lining and low-tone muffler reduce noise through a unique baffle system and make this unit the quietest in its class. The residential-friendly 63 dBA has about the same noise level as normal conversation. The alternator produces less than 5% total harmonic distortion (THD) to ensure safe use with even the most sensitive electronics. This generator is available for all 50 states, and the ATS100 is UL and cUL listed in the US and Canada. Buy with confidence - Champion Support and our nationwide network of service centers will back your purchase up with a 10-year limited warranty and FREE lifetime technical support.

For a 3000 square foot home, including the pool house / equipment, it powers about 65% of the devices (lights, water pump, heat pump, electronics / tv / satellite ) and makes staying in the home easy while my neighbors either went to hotels or struggled with their portables, refilling their tanks every 6 to 12 hours of use.
Although I have most of the house on the system, I bought this unit primarily because winter ice issue to deal with almost every year. Prior to getting the generator, I have had varying degrees of sucess with portable generators, with a few times our generator did not even start, and the amount of anxiety wondering what the power out game plan was going to look like in action.
As far as installation goes, most electricians are going to charge anywhere from $500 to $1000 for transfer box, and then the plumber to hook up the gas line. Gas has to be ran to the unit, so unless you have an existing gas line already in place, the plumber has to lay pipe and your natural gas. Total cost for install was just under $1500.
Champion unit looks great, self tests every week, and providing I maintain the unit, it should last many years
Runs on natural gas or propane
The installation is not too technical but some knowledge of electrical is necessary and many areas require a licensed electrician and plumber to perform the installation. My neighbor and I installed it - this saves money but may affect the warranty. I purchased #6/3 wire for the mains, two runs of #14/5 for the controls, batteries, and some pipe for the natural gas for a total of about $300.
The automatic transfer switch (not pre-wired) only has twelve slots so plan your circuits carefully. I have two sub panels so I was able to connect my whole house as most of my major appliances also operate on natural gas. Installation of the ATS is not too difficult but does take some time - the diagram for connecting the 10 control wires is quite clear and easy to follow. The only problem we had in the entire installation was that the ATS would blow a fuse every time it switched and the fuses are a bit difficult to access.
On a power outage the unit starts in about 10 seconds and loads quickly. The V twin cylinder engine is fairly smooth and even comes with an oil cooler. Checking the sound level with a phone app I recorded 63 db, just as advertised; this is much quieter than the 6.5 kw portable I was using.
The unit starts automatically once a week and runs for 15 minutes to run the diagnostics to be sure everything is performing. For reasons unknown the trouble light is mounted on the rear of the unit - I think I will move it to the front so it can be more readily seen.
My first impressions of the unit are quite good, I have tested it several times but not actually had to use it. If it stands the test of time this will have been a very good investment.
AND A PROBLEM
In the area I live we occasionally have a very short power blip - often a few seconds to several seconds and the generator will start even if the utility power has been restored. Once the generator has started the ATS will switch to the generator even if the utility power has been restored then quickly switch back to utility! These multiple switches are hard on anything with a motor and very hard on anything with a compressor - the overload on my A/C tripped. The generator needs an adjustable time delay for starting and the ATS definitely should not switch to the generator if utility power has been restored. I do not know if other brands have these problems.
I emailed my concerns to customer service and was informed that by turning on a couple of dip switches I could obtain a 30 second starting delay but, when I did so, I actually got less than 20 seconds. This is better than the 2 second delay as shipped but is not long enough - I would prefer a full minute. In a recent two week period I experienced four brief outages none of which lasted more than 30 - 45 seconds and I do not want the wear caused by the generator starting and ATS switching on these brief outages.
Champion customer service was prompt in responding to my concerns (even if I did not get the answer I wanted).
5/23/19 Power failed for the first time since I purchased the unit - it performed perfectly. I have begun manual exercising the unit as it seems that weekly is more often than necessary.
I have made multiple calls to resolve any none working issues with no retunred calls. ATS switch does not work and fuses blow out easy not to mention they are hard to get to or should I say impossible.
