Top customer reviews
I don't like having to store gasoline, so decided to go with the dual fuel model. This also allows me to store the generator in the basement instead of in the shed.
I ran it through the recommended 5 hour break in period and did the first oil change. They I gave my AC a shot. It started up just fine with the RV sitting in the driveway. But that's not a real world situation, so figured I'd do a review after using it while camping.
We just got back from a week trip to a local state park. Three days into our trip, we had a day that was about 95 degrees so wanted to run the A/C. The generator started right up and I left it out of ECO mode. I plugged the camper in and went inside. I turned on the A/C, the fan started, then shut right off. I went back to the generator and it was in overload. I shut it back down, unplugged the camper and restarted the generator. Back in the camper, I threw the battery disconnect and put the fridge on propane. Plugged the camper back in, this time the A/C started right up.
This isn't a bad thing to me. What it means is that since the battery was fairly low, the converter had to pull a lot of current to recharge the battery. After the A/C was running, I put the battery back in the circuit and put the fridge on Auto. No problem keeping up with it. I will be putting a hard start capacitor into the A/C, should not have any issues in the future.
I also used the generator 3 other times to recharge the battery. When it was recharging the battery, the generator was running slightly more than at idle when in ECO mode. When running the A/C, charging the battery and running the fridge in ECO mode, it was just slightly below the level if ECO was off. Running the fridge, the generator was a bit loud. I did not measure the db level. When just charging the battery, I had to listen for the generator when I was more than about 50 feet away.
As for propane usage, I started the trip at 4.2 hours. I brought a "fresh" Blue Rhino tank. I know that these are not filled completely, but it was what I had available at the time. With running about 3.5 hours with the A/C and almost 5 hours just a bit over idle. I ended up with 8.3 hours out of that tank.
A change I'd like Champion to make is that they need to have an hour meter built in. I installed one of the after market meters. It would add just a couple of bucks to the price and makes oil changes and maintenance much easier.
Will not order anything else from ACME.
I just finished the 5hr break in period and added synthetic 5W30. The oil change was incredibly easy, took all of 5 minutes. The drain plug has a hose already attached to it so All you do is un-clamp the hose which is inserted into a metal plug, extend it and drain! When done just insert the hose back into the plug, clamp, close the side panel and done! AWESOME!! It is details like this that make it a pleasure to use and maintain.
