I broke this generator in properly, checked every bolt and nut and it is set well from the factory. They seem to have some sort of oil in it, nowhere near enough to run it (as stated on the box and generator itself) so drain it out and put in some good oil. I ran this thing no less than 8 hours (seemingly longer) on the 1.5 gallon full tank. It comes with spark plug removal tool and the proper funnel for not only changing the oil but also adding a tiny bit to the cylinder for storage.
The fuel on and off switch is located properly so that the carb runs dry. This thing should honestly cost more than it does, but it's nice to have this price range for people who need a little power when emergencies strike.
The unit it only slightly louder than my central air compressor. Grab some oil stabilizer and carb cleaner. Run this thing the right way and break it in well. It isn't too hard to carry, good weight balance overall and about 60 lbs. I didn't feel a big difference with a crankcase full of oil and tank full of gasoline.
I am very happy with this purchase, it's great insurance.
I am now a big champion fan.
UPDATE 12/19: Promised to update with any issues. Dropped from 5 to 1 star. Seems that despite appropriate storage (running it out of gas, making sure oil is up, stored under cover, etc.), when mine has set for a bit (couple of months), it doesn't want to start. I had a mechanic friend of mine look at it and, while he didn't tell me exactly what the issues are, he DID say it isn't worth fixing. When it worked, it did a great job. What I have issues with is that it's apparently NOT built to last any length of time and, for a little more money, I could have bought one that would have been good for YEARS not MONTHS.
Just had a power outage and i’m writing this in the dark on my phone because the piece of junk won’t even start. Doesn’t even attempt to try and start - it’s like the on/off switch isn’t working or something or some safety shut off switch quit working. Nothing like a piece of vital equipment not working when you need it most. I have a Honda lawn mower that has been running strong and starts on the first crank after 13 years.... my next generator will be a Honda...
For the purpose of controlling expectations, this is important to note that this is a small basic generator. It does a fine job of keeping electrons flowing to quite a few small things, and possibly one large thing. Startup surges will cause the voltage to dip briefly, so running electronic equipment that need stable power, at the same time as something with a large surge might not work well. There are bigger, more expensive generators that are designed for that sort of service.
This generator operates our refrigerator/freezer, a number of LED lights, and some fans during outages. Fuel consumption seems much lower than that of larger units, providing the same service.
