I read this book and could not put it down, finishing it within a span of a few days. Chris takes us through his fascinating lief journey and makes it our own. From his rough and tumble beginnings, to his path as a world class Muay Thai fighter, the pages of this book speak to all of us who have, and seek to, overcome life’s myriad punches. We not only learn what it takes to become an elite world class fighter and get an insight to the warrior training inherent therein, but get to watch a beautiful love blossom from within the depth of a grimy gym basement. Chris valiantly shares his own family disfunctions so that in the process we can all take away what it means to become a true parent. Chris does not hide his manifold mistakes and life’s takedowns, but one reads and learns what it takes to capture the glory of raising a fist in the air for victory.
If one is looking for action and entertainment, rare would one find a book that grips one at every page with stories of real life human lions facing each other in a ring. If one is looking for inspiration, rare would one find a book that speaks to a person within so many facets and leaves one with such hope. If one is looking for a book that can literally change a life, Chris shows us that whereas a tragedy is a drama with a sad outcome with a protagonist destined to experience a downfall, we are free to create our own destiny, that we all make mistakes, but we have within us the fortitude to learn, change, and grow.
As I closed this book, Chris helped me come to the realization that the future is not written. There is no fate we cannot change, no prediction we cannot defy. Chris made his own future, by his own choices, his own willpower, his own persistence, and his determination to survive and champ up. Read this book and I promise you that you will be inspired to make Chris’ story your own, and champ up!
Rare is it that a book entertains, captivates, and is capable of changing one’s life; Champ Up is such a book. It should be on everyone’s shelf and its message will no doubt resonate in the reader’s heart and soul!
Being tough, was not what this story is about. The throughline is about a father's love or lack there of. Chris Romulo takes you on a journey for that search that is oh too common, searching and hoping for a loving relationship with one's father, all while striving to be the best father he could under the most difficult of circumstances. If you are looking for that stereotypical fighter braggadocio, you won't find that here either. Chris Romulo is a man of humility and compassion who can also knock you unconscious with a single blow. The Muay Thai aspect and the relationships aspects of his story run parallel but could easily branch off to two separate books, books I would absolutely want to read. Chris Romulo is a Queens guy, the language and cadence of his words allows you to feel that. I read this book in one day, a New York minute if you will.
The storytelling is masterful and makes for a very easy and addictive read. I couldn't put my kindle down. Each story sucks you in as Chris gives a painstaking attention to detail, crafting the perfect picture in your mind for each chapter.
This book will inspire you do more, be more, and strive for more. Because that's Chris's story.
