Chances Are portrays the power of love and understanding in a comedic way. If you love good old sentimental movies with a splash of comedy, as well as a great soundtrack, check out Chances Are! Soundtrack includes Cher and Peter Cetera singing that popular and beautiful song After All, as well as Johnny Mathis' Chances Are and Rod Stewart's Forever Young.

This is my favorite Robert Downey film. It's a completely sappy 80's movie, but that just gives it more charm.
Robert Downey plays a recent college grad (Louie) who is the reincarnated soul of Cybil Shephard's husband. When he meets her daughter, they hit it off. Louie begins remembering things from his former life, frightening the (still mourning over her husband) living daylights out of Corinne. Louie must prove to Corrine that he's not making everything up, or he'll lose her forever.
Excellent acting by the entire cast--Downey really shines. Any of you who stay in Monday nights because you don't want to miss Downey playing Larry Paul on Ally will love this movie!

Chances Are applies to all the people out there that believes that there is always a second chance for everything. The first time I watched this film,i loved it already. It tells us about a man who died right at the time that his wife is gonna have a baby. He begged the people up there to let him go back to his family again, and he came back as a guy who is so much younger than his wife. Cybill Sheperd was the perfect actress for the part of Carin and Robert Downey Jr showed that he is an actor worth of everybody's attention, he was perfect for the part of the reincarnated Louie.

Cybil Shepherd as always is excellent, as is Robert Downey Jr. in this great film.
Alex (Robert Downey Jr) is reincarnated, and suddenly gets his memories from his previous life... only to discover he was the father of his current love interest.
Watching Alex respond to his daughter - or dodging her advances, when she's more interested in being his girlfriend... is quite hilarious! Along with his memories, the emotions (his love for his wife) come back as well. Problems? Convicing his wife who he is, handling his best friend's love interest of his wife, and then dealing with the attraction his daughter has on him.... to name a few!
It's really fun watching him try and convince his wife who he is! You'll be cheering him on, all along the way!!! Sweet, touching, funny, full of emotions and fun from the first frame of the film, all the way to the last! As for the ending (without giving anything away, of course!)... is not quite what I thought it would be... but it's perfect.... and a little odd at the same time!

The script is well written - there were moments so touching that my eyes turned watery.

The superb cast is another reason for the success - Cybill Shepherd (Moonlighting), Ryan O' Neal, Mary Stuart Masterson (Bed of Roses) and Robert Downey, Jr. These are faces which we seldom see nowadays and what a refreshing treat it is to watch them portraying their roles naturally, in their prime and with all their hearts. Robert Downey, Jr.'s performance, as the incarnated husband of Shepherd who died 23 years ago, was brilliant. He added an additional level of depth and sophistication to his character - warm, understanding, more than you would expect from a 22-year old and exactly what the movie required him to be - a forty something dad who was very proud of his grown up daughter and her job as a prosecutor.

The story was simple and complete on its own: a reunion of the deceased husband with the living after 23 years - his wife, his loyal best friend, a daughter he never lived to see. By a simple twist of fate in the end, we saw the jigsaw pieces fall in the proper place. A beautiful song with a nostalgic melody was sung as the credits started rolling.

A wonderful movie.

Excellent Movie !!! I first stumbled across this movie many years ago and liked the movie but since then have grown to love it! A wonderful romantic comedy with a great love story.
After, integrating some metaphysical studies into my life, I have come to believe in reincarnation and this movie touches on this subject with humor and romance.
I think one of the most interesting aspects of the movie is the soundtrack including the "After All" song from Peter Cetera and Cher. If you listen closely to the lyrics of that song, it expresses so eloquently Corrine's and Louie's reunion after his reincarnation and their undying love.

It's odd how now-a-days when people think of Robert Downey Jr, instantly they're thinking Tony Stark with the Iron Man movies these last several years. He does a great job in them, but I always liked him prior to that, and this movie is one of the reasons. This one, and Heart and Souls...

This is a "chick flick" that isn't. And that's mostly due to Downey's portrayal of his character. It's one of the roles he seemed to be typecast in for a while, but he does it so WELL that it seems his natural element anyway.

It's a charming movie about a guy who is reincarnated (and due to a mix-up, doesn't get the "shot" that wipes out his prior life). He grows up again, ends up meeting up with his "daughter" and, not knowing it's her, gets invited to her house where he meets the girls mother, who was his wife in his previous life. As he's deja-vu'd repeatedly, it begins to dawn on him what is happening.

The story is pretty unique, even if not all the elements are, but at no point does it get overboard or cloying or too silly.

All the characters in it do great jobs, and it's just a fun movie to watch for some lighthearted laughs and some "aawwww" moments. And for the guys out there, he does help keep it from being some movie like "The Notebook" or something.
