I enjoyed the way Terry and Liam's story puts a new spin on the werebear niche in a fresh new environment. Vietnam isn't the kind of place you'd expect a bear to turn up, but that's exactly where Liam and Terry meet. The action quickly heats up from their initial meeting. There's danger, mystery, and of course some steaming hot scenes as the chemistry between these two develops.
As one of the last werebears, Liam's past adds urgency to the situation. I'm a sucker for rare and wonderful heroes, and this shifter is as rare as they come! Terry helps her new man in his fight to thwart a hunter who wants to snuff out shapeshifters for good. The threat really brings them together and accents a romance that was bound - maybe even fated - to happen.
Hopefully this book kicks off a series about the Last Shapeshifters (at least, the sub-title here is very hopeful!). If Grace's next books are half as good as this one, count me in!
Terry is a woman who spontaneously decides to quit her job and leave England the next day to go backpacking in Vietnam.
She meets and pursues Liam.
He tells her about his wife and that he is a 200-300 year old werebear. She intelligently asks him
Why he turns into a bear instead of a jaguar. 8-O? Wth?
Then she is suddenly jealous that she isn't the first woman he was ever interested in. He should have waited 200+ years for her.
Next paragraph she is angry that he is betraying his wife a mere 200 years after her death.
Then he kisses her and she wants him. Then she tries to push him away. But he sticks a hand in her dress and suddenly, "Her ramparts crumbling, she knew she was his."
This whole story is so awkward and pointless.
Liam's wife was killed by a werewolf who is trying to exterminate all shapeshifters but he doesn't really care. When the wolf attacked him after killing his wife he merely disabled the wolf and wandered off to roam aimlessly. Wth? Seriously this guy is so apathetic and lame. Looks are all he seems to have going for him. But I guess the weird, wishy washy girl is a good match for him.
I didn't actually finish the story. I skipped ahead to see it ended as awkwardly as the rest of the book.
I can happily say that the story is as good as I hoped!
Terry is a different sort of heroine. She's more energetic and spunky, and perhaps into getting in trouble on occasion. Her curiosity is maybe not so great, but I think that's what made her more interesting to me. She's an unapologetic sort of woman who doesn't take anything from anyone she doesn't have to.
In contrast, Liam is more of a lone wolf sort (lone bear? lol...) and kind of the dark and mysterious stranger type. They don't really seem like they'd get along at first glance, but sometimes looks can be deceiving.
What I really enjoyed about this one was the connection there. Liam might want to be that lone wolf type of man, but Terry just won't let him. In addition to that, I think Liam helps to tone down some of the things that might make Terry a little too much at times. They work together, in a complementary contrasting sort of way, which was fun to read about and I think made for a really great story.
There's more besides their coming together, too. This story has some suspense to it at times, with a sort of coming of age/coming to terms with oneself situations, too. I think love is the thing that brings everything together in the end. It was really deep and emotional to me, too.
If you enjoy shifter romances, I think you should definitely check this one out! It's got a lot of the things you're probably looking for in the genre, but with some nice surprises, too. A fun story, but serious and emotional, as well. A really great read and one that I'd highly recommend!
Terry, the heroine, is a delightful character. She’s spunky and faces challenges with a great attitude. Liam was intriguing and alpha. A perfect match for Terry. The writing is clean and well edited. Some of the descriptions were absolutely gorgeous. I loved that this story was set in an area of the world that is different and interesting. In summary, there is so much to love about this book. It is well deserving of all five stars.
