''Barbara has written a book that is both simple and complex. Through easy-to-understand language and examples, she explains the kind of thinking and actions a leader has to do to make change happen. Yet, she doesn't shy away from illuminating the complexities of change leadership. A very useful model for the 21st century.'' -Joel Barker, futurist and author of Paradigms: the Business of Discovering the Future
''There must be more than a hundred books that have been written to help people cope with the changes that are imposed by external circumstances. However, there is another kind of change where we attempt to alter the way we do things and the way our organizations function so that we can flourish when we are dealing with externally imposed changes. Dr. Trautlein's work identifies and describes the skills needed to effectuate change within an organization and provides individuals with the insights they need to develop their change leadership talents. These insights are practical and readily comprehensible because she recognizes that recommendations have to work on the shop floor and not just in the consultant's report.'' -Jeff Hazel, Senior Director, American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers Association
''Trautlein's book provides a novel and compelling approach to change management that focuses on self-knowledge as the means for making effective change ''stick''. Change Intelligence invites change leaders to diagnose and understand their change management style, learn about its strengths and blindspots, all on the path towards building change intelligence. The book effectively identifies strategies for building our capacity to tap into the head, heart and hands of different change leadership styles. The book will be highly relevant and useful for any leader or manager trying to make effective change happen.'' --- Jane E. Dutton, Ph.D., Robert L. Kahn, Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration and Psychology, University of Michigan
''Technology today is evolving at an incredibly rapid pace, and leaders face daunting challenges implementing change in their organizations. Whether you're a CIO, IT project manager or technology professional on the front lines, you'll find Trautlein's Change Intelligence provides a practical, insightful roadmap to help you effectively engage and equip your teams to navigate towards successful and sustainable transformation.'' - Carolyn Leighton, CEO, Chairwoman and Founder, Women in Technology International
''Change Intelligence is well articulated, well-grounded, and well-presented work on change leadership. The framework of change leadership and intelligence based on head, heart and hands, and the different change leadership styles is a fascinating one. It is a major contribution to both theory as well as practice of change and leadership. It would be of use in diverse settings - both organizational as well as individual. The author motivates each of the styles with solid empirical examples, and develops them logically, coherently, and persuasively. The assessment tool that goes with this work will enhance the reach and the demand for this book. I have no hesitation is strongly endorsing this work.'' - Vipin Gupta, Ph.D., Professor of Professor and Co-director, Global Management Center, California State University at San Bernardino
''Change Intelligence not only provides a tool for identifying a person's strengths and blind spots for effective change, but also provides a practical 'how to use' guide through case studies. Walking through each scenario of high heart, high head, and high hands articulates very well the watch outs that we all typically encounter and identifies what can be done to avert the stepping on a landmine. Help the hands, engage the brain, inspire the heart; a winning formula for change execution.'' - Lyle Loutsch, Senior Director of Reliability and Engineering, Wells Enterprises, Incorporated
''Getting change to be accepted and truly implemented remain two of the biggest challenges of management. Trautlein provides a simple and concrete triple H framework (i.e., head, heart and hand) that can help individual managers as well as teams and organizations ensure they are addressing all relevant aspects of change. Not only does she present a useful framework, through her many concrete and real examples she shows how to apply the ideas in real life. The book provides opportunities for all of us, whether we are dominated by the head, heart or hand, to improve our change intelligence.'' - Robert Hooijberg, Ph.D., Professor of Organizational Behavior at IMD, Switzerland
''Brilliant! Not only is Dr. Trautlein one of the most brilliant consultants I know, but she has the uncanny ability to take a very complex subject and design simple yet practical tools around it that lead to organizational success. A must read for any organization undergoing change!'' --- Linda Liang, Ph.D., President of Organizational Resources and Department Chair of the Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology

I purchased this book after attending one of her sessions at the Project Management Institute's Global Congress, where she was one of the few presentations (maybe 2 out of 100 that I've attended) to get a standing ovation. Why? Because her message is so important to project managers (and will be to others as well). Project managers have to take advantage of all their capabilities to manage within the constraints within which they work. Barbara's CQ tool shows them they they may not be using all of their own capabilities and how to get at those missing pieces (hand, heart, head) once one realizes that these tendencies even exist (as she's illustrated) in each of us.
Well done and enjoyable.
The book is a good sequential read, but is also nicely organized into content summaries to allow it to become a useful preparation tool for leaders and their coaches. I keep it on the corner of my desk as a quick reference guide to prep for meetings with clients, and have seen my coaching improve as I have a cleaner framework to help others see themselves in the eyes of their team.
Barbara's "deeper dive" into how the model plays out at the executive, project manager and supervisory levels helps drive the points home. Her mapping of leadership styles to common change models such as the Lewin's change lifecycle and the Kubler-Ross change curve adds still yet another level of practicality to the application of the seven leadership styles. The book's online self-assessment is a bonus.
Change Intelligence has gone right onto the list of the top ten suggested readings for my clients and colleagues. I can't wait for the sequel!
Being a psychotherapist working with leadership teams, I am familiar with IQ, believe strongly in EQ, and have now delightfully been educated in CQ. Through the personal assessment, I am able to laser focus on MY strengths and weaknesses, coming from a new angle- which is a real plus. Dr. Trautlein has hit the mark, where there's been a gap. Change is about transformation and all leading edge organizations are looking to improve productivity and accelerate needed change so to get there. At a time when confidence in business is at an all time low, leaders must commit to step up and lead their team and organization in a whole new way. This is MUST read for those knowing 'it's time' to make new changes - ones that will STICK this time.
