Editorial Reviews

Soul singer Charles Bradleys star has been on the rise since the release of his widely praised 2011 debut album No Time For Dreaming, and his ascent has continued long after the release of his triumphant second album, 2013s Victim of Love. Dubbed The Screaming Eagle of Soul, the singer is proud to present his highly anticipated third album Changes, on Daptone imprint Dunham Records. The album is named for his popular, smoldering (SPIN) cover of the Black Sabbath track. I think about the lyrics very closely when I sing Changes and get emotional, notes Bradley. It makes me think of my mother and the changes in my life since she passed away.

By now, Charles Bradleys remarkable, against-all-odds rise has been well documented: how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptones Gabriel Roth. The documentary Charles Bradley: Soul of America, directed by Poull Brien, follows Bradley s extraordinary journey during the electrifying and transformative months leading up to the release of debut album No Time for Dreaming. The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another and Victim of Love saw Bradley emerging from his past heartaches stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share. Victim of Love went on to receive overwhelming praise and was included on Best of 2013 lists by SPIN, MOJO, Paste, BuzzFeed, Rough Trade & more. The albums title track was also named one of Rolling Stones Best Songs of 2013.

Charles Bradley has also made a name for himself as a riveting live performer. Hes taken his show to venues and festivals across the globe including Coachella, Glastonbury Festival and Primavera Sound. Bradleys also performed on famed stages including the Apollo Theater the same place he saw his idol James Brown perform when he was 14 years old, and the Beacon Theatre where hes separately supported The Tedeschi Trucks Band and the Afghan Whigs.

About five years ago,I got seriously into the whole Daptone label music scene. The whole theme they had was very authentically retro. It wasn't just the instrumental style of the music that came out of it. It was the sound of the recordings, even the old school film based photographic style of cover art. Charles Bradley is their key male solo artist. And his chief musical influence was James Brown-even working part time impersonating the man. As for me I have his first two albums. And was very excited to pick up his third when it came out. Again, there's no disappointment.

The album opens with a partially spoken word,organ/piano based version of "God Bless America" where Bradly discussed the pros and cons of being black in this country. "Good To Be Back Home" is stomping, bluesy funk with phat electric guitar and horn accents throughout. "Nobody But You",the title song,"Crazy For Your Love" and the closer "Slow Love" are all reverbed guitar heavy ballads while "Ain't Gonna Give You Up" is a thick, slow deep funk groove with a bee like synthesizer buzzing. "Things We Do For Love" is a brightly melodic uptempo gospel/soul number filled with multiple backup singers and "You Think I Don't Know (But I Know" has the same vibe about it. "Change For The World" is an brief late 60's/early 70's Ike Hayes like psychedelic funk message song warning about the revival of segregationist racial behavior.

In a lot of ways, this might just be the very best album Charles Bradley has made thus far. The backup instrumentation of instrumentals such as the Budos Band provide a sound that is squarely in both the deep Southern soul and psychedelic funk sound of the late 60's.

I recently saw Charles Bradley in concert for the first time (more on that later). Bradley is known as having the uncanny ability to personify, if not channel, the James Brown spirit, while at the same time having a wonderful R&B voice. This is Bradley's 3rd album.

"Changes" (11 tracks; 40 min.) opens with a quick and gospel-tinged "God Bless America", only to then dive straight into "Good To Be Back Home". The song is drenched in retro-soul just like Sharon Jones brings her stuff (they are both on the same music label, Daptone). The songs are quite focused and to the point (most of them are in the 3 to 4 min. range). Some of the album's highlights for me include the pensive "Ain't Gonna Give It Up", "Crazy For Your Love", and "You Think I Don't Know (But I Know)", but the reality is that there really are no weak songs on here, and the album makes for a very consistent, and coherent, listening experience.

This past weekend I saw Charles Bradley and his band, the aptly named Extraordinaires, in concert at the rapidly growing Bunbury Music Festival here in Cincinnati. They played an early evening set on the main stage that brimmed with energy. The set list was divided pretty evenly between this new album and the "No Time For Dreaming" album. If you haven't seen Bradley performing live yet, you haven't experienced the full Bradley experience, not by a long shot! The man is absolutely amazing. The massive crowd absolutely loved it. If you have a chance to see Bradley live, do not miss him! Meanwhile, "Changes" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Charles Bradley third album, the same sound that brings back so many memories, old man soul, funk for years, echoes of James Brown ... Vintage? but it can be so pure, so clean, so really it ends up convincing. It is no longer the surprice of his early records but the authentic remains of his music. Great voice and magnificent musicians. It could be a disk early 70s but nevertheless here's its charm. Solid and seamless, a good opportunity to remember those times

James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding move over 'cause Charles Bradley gets a spot on the same stage. This album and Victim of Love are the real deal. With new music like this being made, the Motor City might just open back up the automobile plants - if they could make cars like that again. We'll probably just have to settle for the music, though. I'm wearing these two albums out - well, as much as you can wear out zeros and ones in a digital cloud. Amazon Music Unlimited is the real deal, too.

This is one of those rare albums where I hear one track and know that I have to buy the whole album. Charles Bradley has an amazing voice and this album in many ways sounds like it could have been among the great classic soul albums of the '70s, even though it just came out. Listen to a sample and you will be impressed too!

Charles Bradley sings from the heart. I found out about him through Black Sabbath. You read that right. "Changes" is a cover from the Black Sabbath album "Vol.4". Mr. Bradley takes it and puts an R'n'B spin on it and it works. This is my second Charles Bradley album and I will be purchasing his other albums. Highly recommended.

This is a fantastic album. This effort is well produced and the backing band sounds great along with Charles' outstanding voice. Daptone is producing some of the best R&B on the market. My favorite songs on the record are 'Good to be back home' which has a laid back funk groove. "Nobody but you' is also a great tune. The most funky, rocking tune on the album is 'Ain't it a sin'. If that tune doesn't have you slapping the steering wheel and jiving all over the road, nothing will. I enjoyed the album so much that I went out and picked up the limited edition vinyl as well. Another solid outing for Charles! Keep em coming!
