Changing Course was an emotionally exhausting read, but I mean that in a positive way. Readers are introduced to Sarah and Brett through some flashbacks told from Brett's point of view. Sarah was a handful, spunky and likable in those flashbacks. Unfortunately, a tragic accident took that Sarah away and left behind one that was about as far from likable as you can imagine. But, Brett was devoted to her, and though they split up, he still loved her and tried to be there for her. He still lived his own life, but put his best interests aside as he catered to her. That is, until sassy, sweet and sexy waitress Jesse finally decides to act on her crush and makes a move.

So, here's the thing: I genuinely liked Sarah at the beginning of the book. She and Brett seemed to have a solid relationship built on something real. I had very mixed feelings when he started flirting with Jesse and when their relationship began to change into something more. That, however, quickly changed as more of Sarah's true colors became clear. God, she was such a manipulative b***h. I mean, straight up evil and insincere. She made me sick to my stomach.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Jesse from the beginning. I want to be her friend. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters told from her perspective and it was apparent how much she really liked Brett. But, I had difficulties with their pairing because of Sarah. Conflicting emotions. So many of them. It was easy to forget my reservations as I observed more of Jesse and Brett together. They were perfection. They complemented each other so well and their relationship was natural. Real and believable.

Brett was incredible. Sexy, sweet, caring and flawed, he won my heart. Talk about someone with conflicting emotions...

Wow. Just, wow. Don't start reading this unless you have at least a few hours to spare! I got caught up immediately and ended up reading til my contact fell out because who wastes time with blinking when the story takes control?? Seriously hot scenes and an unbelievably twisted plot that hooks you so deep you find yourself wondering what Sarah is cooking up while you're brushing your teeth or what a cup of coffee at Nell's would be like. Can't wait to see what else is in store for Caleb!

Brett and Sarah story was funny, charming, and heartbreaking...until a point. A horrific tragedy changes their relationship forever, as Sarah never emotionally and mentally recovers from the accident.

I was immediately drawn in. The characters where great and the story was unlike any I've read.

Then it turned into the cliche whitewash of a romance novel.

Introduce Jesse: a pint size waitress, who is in her 7th(?) year of college because she's so tiny and quirky and has a big rack but she's really small and has a degree in Bowling Alley Management because she unique like that and she's petite. Did I mention she's tiny? Because you'll be reminded of it about 187 thousand times.

What could have been a great story turned into a boring book of boring with Jesse's introduction. She wavers from shy, insecure, and in constant need of reassurance to screaming, shrieking, and yelling about any thing.

She was so unlikable no matter how hard the author tried. She inserted herself in to everyone's lives, demanding that she knew better than everyone. The author tried to make Sarah, arguably the biggest victim in the entire story, into the villain, but even that couldn't make me care about Jesse.

The only interesting parts if the story were when Sarah was involved. The rest was an exercise in the author's fantasy world where she is made into a special snowflake like no other who is in need of protection. And the alternating POVs just made you relive all this in exhausting detail.

The author needed to take herself (Jesse) out of it and really could have done something.

It started off so strong and interesting, and ended in a fart.

Changing Course is an emotional roller coaster that’s sure to leave you reeling.

Detective Brett Sharp met the love of his life, Sarah Erickson, during a night out at the bar. They spent seven wonderful years together before a tragic accident pulled the rug out from under his feet.

Now, four years later, Brett meets someone who makes him feel alive.

Jesse is a barista at the coffee shop that Brett and his best friend, Caleb, often frequent. She’s sweet, naïve, and down to earth. She makes him feel things that he’s long forgotten. Struggling with his desire to move on and the obligation that he feels he has to his past … Brett is torn. Will he be able to let go of his past in order to secure his future? Or will everything come crashing down around him for a second time?

WOW! Aly did a fantastic job in bringing the struggles that a person goes through in the face of a tragedy to light. I felt for Caleb, for Brett, and for Jesse.

Brett was easy enough to like and I admired him for his loyalty; even if it did make me want to smack him at times. I may not have always understood his choices, but I do believe that he thought he was doing what was right, and for that, I cannot fault him.

I’m not going to lie. Jesse irritated me in the beginning of the novel. She was just TOO sweet and wholesome for my taste. I mean, really? She had such a STRONG aversion to cursing that it drove me insane. However, I really warmed up to her as the story progressed. The way she handled Brett’s delicate situation was admirable. She tried to sympathize with all parties, and I give her credit for that. I wouldn’t have been able to.

Caleb was my absolute favorite character, and the one that I was able to relate to the most.
