Changing Our Mind has helped thousands of families and congregations carefully and compassionately rethink traditional religious teachings about full LGBTQ inclusion.

Christian denominations and churches everywhere struggle with the issue of LGBTQ inclusion. With growing scientific evidence, our wider society has taken big steps, but too many religious families and communities have not kept up. As much as ever, many people still experience deep condemnation by evangelical and other churches, getting kicked out or altogether leaving. Dr. David Gushee offers a powerful, inspiring message of hope and healing by helping Christians to return to Bible study, prayer, and reflection in a way that creates a vision for a more inclusive church.

Arguably America's leading Christian ethicist, Gushee has written many helpful books for churches, discussion groups, and individuals. He is the author of the "Evangelical Declaration Against Torture" and drafted the "Evangelical Climate Initiative." HisKingdom Ethics is on pastors' bookshelves nationwide. Now, in what he describes as the most important book of his career as a Christian teacher, Gushee gives us this encouraging discussion on how he changed his mind.

From his own careful Bible study, research, and prayer, Gushee takes us along an conversational theological journey. In one book, he concisely marks out every single component of historic Christian sexual morality. He covers all of the relevant biblical passages and all the theological positions, including the key argument of creation. With a careful study of context and biblical language, he walks us through a principled discussion that is respectful of traditionalists while calling for inclusion and the end of contempt. This definitive third edition also includes Gushee's response to critics and a study guide for small group discussion.

Author Brian McLaren calls Changing Our Mind "deep, thoughtful and brilliant . . . [and] refreshingly clear and understandable." It is an eminently useful handbook for any individual or organization that wants to better contextualize traditional church teachings, which have been and must continue to change.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The style is accessible, not academic as with many of his other works. It reads more like a journal than a scholarly tome, so you won't be wondering what in the heck he's talking about ... Gushee is a sage among straight, conservative Christians, so he can't be easily dismissed ... The whole book just feels balanced ... Gushee is humble. He repents, and when he does, you sense his grief."

--Matt Rogers, mattrogers.us.

"This is how our minds can be changed--'transformative encounters with real human beings.' Such encounters, Gushee argues, are an experience of God's Spirit at work. And if that is what is going on--if God's Spirit is at work and on the move--then the tribal gatekeepers frightened by this book have very good cause to be frightened indeed."

--Fred Clark, Slacktivist Blog.

From http: //bit.ly/2r337K6

"While I disagree with Gushee's conclusion, I actually agree with his pastoral heart and I resonate very much with his loving posture toward LGBT people. More than that, I too want to join the crusade in ending hateful, judgmental, dehumanizing and damning rhetoric that's been lobbed like grenades across the island, blowing up the 'others.' I concur with David when he says: 'I will henceforth oppose any form of discrimination against you. I will seek to stand in solidarity with you who have suffered the lash of countless Christian rejections. His words are scandalously close to Jesus's posture with the woman caught in adultery, who by law should have been stoned. Jesus, quite literally, stood in solidarity with the woman, fresh off her adulterous affair. Jesus didn't affirm her sin, but He affirmed her humanity. And that's where many on the evangelical right need to grow. We need to be more like Jesus. We need to repent from our unchristian rhetoric, our tone, our posture. We need to recognize that unloving speech spackled over with a thin veneer of truth is a religious

charade."

--Preston Sprinkle, Theology in the Raw.

"David Gushee is arguably the preeminent Evangelical ethicist of our time. Until this book, that is, which is more than a book. It is an event and it is one that will propel Gushee outside the camp of approved Evangelical scholars. But this is where Jesus did his best work. It is the place where the gospel first happened for all people. Gushee's book will draw many Evangelicals to find Jesus outside the camp with his vulnerable gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender followers, those who have suffered in exile for a very long time. The thing you will notice in Changing Our Mind, beyond the faithful scholarship, is Gushee's voice. Words do matter and the thoughts they convey. But the good shepherd is known primarily by his voice. Gushee's voice is by turns warm, pastoral, prophetic, irenic, careful, authoritative, humble, sorrowful, repentant and even occasionally funny. Gushee's new book is a great read. But his mission is deadly serious. Gushee is out to save the lives of people living with the stigma of sexual minority status. And he is out to save the soul of the Evangelical church, so that it can be good news for all people again."

--Ken Wilson, author of A Letter to my Congregation.

A Great Book For Christians Looking For Guidance On LGBTQ+ Inclusion
This topic is very near & dear to my heart because God has blessed me with countless LGBTQ+ friends & acquaintances over the years. I am thankful that such transformative encounters are an integral part of my faith journey. However, it is evident that many Christians still struggle with navigating this particular subject and simply don't know how to go about it."Changing Our Mind: The Landmark Call For The Inclusion of LGBT Christians" by David P. Gushee masterfully builds a formidable case through careful analysis, personal testimonies and breaking down the often-cited Bible verses through cultural context, studying root words, and other pieces of information that serve as a direct challenge to the conservative sexual ethic that has previously been extrapolated from Scripture.Personally, I got the most out of Gushee's historical comparisons of how Christianity dealt with the issues of slavery and the Holocaust and how they closely mirror today's theological landscape. On the other hand, Gushee's thoughts on biblical inerrancy & his stance on polyamorous relationships will certainly raise some eyebrows. It is worth noting that this book was originally published just prior to the Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage in 2015. I happen to have the 3rd edition of the book, which includes a Small Group Study Guide and an entire section dedicated to responding to critics who unsurprisingly blasted the book upon its initial release. The book's potential as a bridge-builder between Conservative Christian parents and their LGBTQ+ kids is worthy of consideration, however given the sensitive nature of those situations I would stop short of fully endorsing this book for such a purpose and instead advise caution & discernment on a case-by-case basis. While the book isn't 100% perfect, I found it to be a great introduction to the topic of LGBTQ+ inclusion in Christian spaces and would certainly recommend this book to my fellow Christians who are looking for guidance on this particular topic. After all, there is always more room to love our neighbors. ❤️

This groundbreaking book offers guidance on thinking through how the reader can grow in one’s understanding of sexual identity matters. I especially appreciate the conversational tone and the practical advice on interacting with others who don’t agree/oppose full inclusion of LGBTQ people in faith communities. For example, “Name-calling rarely advances the search for truth or the health of Christian community.”

So many insights are shared, including the value of wrestling with one’s questions regarding LGBTQ matters “in the community of the bullied rather than the community of the bullies.” The author also notes that full inclusion of LGBTQ people ≠ “anything goes” with respect to sexual ethics. Then there’s this one: “It says something that secular folks, unhindered by centuries of destructive Christian interpretations of the Bible, have so often reached full acceptance of their LGBTQ neighbors more easily than have Christians.” As I turned the pages, I found myself echoing the words he uses: “News flash: Categories upended. Learning happening.”

I wholeheartedly embrace Rev. Dr. David Gushee’s approach in this book. Written by a straight man who is happily married and has a younger sister who came out as lesbian in 2008, Changing Our Mind makes me want to declare these words, loud and proud, from Cynthia McKinney: “We are way more powerful when we turn to each other and not on each other, when we celebrate our diversity…and together tear down the mighty walls of injustice.”

As a gay Christian who acknowledges and embraces the authority of the Bible, I wrestled with texts in my Holy Spirit-led journey toward acceptance of my sexual orientation. I confess that reading Gushee’s treatise was rather frustrating and annoying in the beginning. I finally pushed through the thinking process of a straight man’s mind and began to appreciate his insights. Then the grappling started up again at the end of the book. I appreciate David.

In this helpful book, Gushee carefully and clearly considers "the gay issue" in conservative Christian churches. He reviews both the pertinent Bible passages and the historical position of the church with respect to sexual ethics in general and homosexuality in particular. In a straightforward and highly readable style Gushee describes the process of his own change of mind and heart. This book will be helpful to any Christian who struggles to reconcile conservative teaching on LGBTQ relationships and the presence of gay believers among us.

I have been wavering on this and now I am changing my mind in favor of inclusion into the church. Thank you for a well written and challenging book on this topic.

I've read several books concerning the other side of the argument (God and Gay Christian is a good start), but this one considers different concerns, thought lines and wider themes. I found it very helpful. Good for anyone questioning our theology and attitude (and helping others on it) but particularly good for church leaders. Many thanks to the author.

Recently, before I read Dave Gushees book, I came finally to a place of rest and to a WHOLEHEARTED conviction. It was exactly the position of Dave Gushhee. Gushee takes a difficult topic for evangelicals to handle, and about which many are afraid to ask, and brings it down to an “everyday person” level. You don’t need a theology degree to understand what Gushee is carefully and faithfully pointing out. His apology for his previous position is genuine, brave and inspiring. If you are a Jesus person, and you want to understand how to fully embrace people like Jesus did, read this book. If you’re from the LGBTQ community and want to know how God really feels about you, read this book. If you’re a Pastor and want to understand how to talk to your people about being fully inclusive AND fully faithful to scripture, read this book, and then go out and buy a copy for every one of them!
