Mickie Siebert is a steward in leadership for women

Mickie Siebert is a name that I just learned recently, but since reading this book I have had many opportunities to share her story with the ambitious women around me as motivation to face challenges in their professional lives. Her story resonates with those of us that seek her example. While there has been significant progress for women in the workplace since the late sixties when Mickie was knocking down barriers in her field to become one of 1,365 owners in the NYSE, many of us still find ourselves at work grabbing our seat in a room full of men. When we do receive opportunities for leadership, we must define our own style and be our own authentic person, not try to imitate the Great Man that we have been told is the model leader. Mickie Siebert has become a role model for me because she never sought to be a feminist icon, she simply started with developing mastery in her field, crafted a vision of success that included being her own boss that required she buy her own seat on the NYSE, she built a quality team by valuing diversity, made sure that team had a shared vision, was never afraid of risk-taking and experimentation in order to keep her company relevant and competitive, demonstrated vulnerability and maturity in the face of criticism and did not let it compromise her ethics or distract her from delivering results, and finally, out of a sense of duty that any good steward would naturally have, she looked around at others that could benefit from her perspective and she shared her gifts by mentoring and taising Awareness of issues that mattered to her to make sure others could follow in her footsteps. I enjoy sharing her story with others now because, as Pulitzer Prize winning Leadership studies author James MacGregor Burns says, "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership." (Burns, 2004) I believe there is nothing more compelling to a generation of future female leaders than a trailblazer like Muriel Siebert, who ends her memoir setting the standard for contemporary leadership saying, “I sleep well at night, knowing that I’ve been competitive but honest, tenacious but scrupulous, tough but fair.” (Siebert, 2002, p. 218)

But the book just seems like a self absorbed woman didnt really motivate me, I dont even remember the interview, cant even remember if I met with a man or a woman. I think she's a feminist? I bought this book because I had to do a report on a female leader and it needed to be someone that wasn't as famous as the Margaret Thatchers and the Hillary Clintons of the world. I was surprised because Muriel Siebert is extremely well versed in the financial world and has done so much for wall street and I had never heard of her. I was also surprised because I thought the book would be a total bore because I am not into the stock exchange or any financial "stuff." The book was a very interesting read and Muriel Siebert is an interesting lady.
