Produced by George Harrison, this collection of mantras and prayers from the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures powerfully transports the listener to a place of peace where it's possible to be one with the universe. It's as if a heavy, enveloping cloak of serenity falls from the dark, floating sounds of cello opening the CD. Shankar employs flute, tamboura, harp, and other instruments to accent the mighty "Om" thread that weaves itself through the cloth of this album, bringing together deep, ominous voices with delicate, earthly instruments. One looking for extensive Shankar sitar might be disappointed, but the beauty of this artist's creativity and spiritual vision sweeps one away into a larger, more meaningful listening experience. A Masterpiece

Ravi Shankar is perhaps the best known artist from the East in the West,and there are reasons far beyond his association with George Harrison{though that contributed hugely to his commercial ability} Yehudi Menuihin recorded with him early, and saw his genius. The concert for the bangladesh propelled him into the forefront, and he has continued to surprise with his explorations. this recording is a flat out masterpiece. Drawn from Vedic texts and the Upanishads, these are prayers of hope, fulfillment, longing and pure bliss. The opening, the intoning of the sacred sylable OM is awesome, and there is simply not a weak cut on this recording. PRABHUJEE, the 15th tarck is ,for me, the most haunting{the liner notes include translations for those of us not fluid in sanskrit nor hindi}"O MASTER<SHOW SOME COMPASSION ON ME/PLEASE COME AND DWELL IN MY HEAR/BECAUSE WITHOUT YOU IT IS PAINFULLY LONELY/FILL THIS EMPTY POT WITH THE NECTAR OF LOVE/..." sung,chanted to perfection,this is simply a profound religious expierence. THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

this is a perfect cd---even George Harrison is on it. My favorite is Karmany evadhikaras te... It's really short and gorgeous--and about working for the sake of working for the divine and expecting nothing from that effort. Mmm

This is a wonderful spiritual album and will delight fans of Ravi Shankar sitar music. They are chants to God in the dialect of India but may be followed along in Sanscrit as well as in native tongue and also in English using the enclosed pamphlet found with the CD. I find the music and chanting wonderful to meditate with or to use as background to work around the home. You will not be disappointed with this album if you love God and if you love the music of Ravi Shankar! George Harrison produced this album and so makes it more special with the spiritual vibrations of this former Beatles member. Namaste

This collection of chants from ancient Indian scriptures is simply the best you can get of such a collection. It starts, as in traditional Indian music, with a chant for Lord Ganesh. The collection is quite varied from chantings of a specific God such as the goddess of Learning (Saraswathi); chantings from the Gita (the famous Karmanyeva adhikareste, which states that one should refrain from acting with expectations about results) and the vedas - there is the other famous Gayathri mantra. The chants are authentic in their rendering in terms of the utterences and adherence to tradition.

For the westerner, all the chants may make no sense at all. But the quality of the vocals tends to give one a feeling of sacredness and sanctity. Some of the chants are melodious; Ravi Shankar's sitar is quite evident in most of these; but it doesn't dominate as with his other renderings. The chants are the main body.

This CD is ideal if your roots are Indian, and you want your child to listen and learn from these. It is nice background music for a religious gathering or for a Yoga class. I use this for many of my Yoga classes. It is not infrequent, that some of my students request this particular CD be the background music for their Yoga class.

A collection of spiritual gems set to music in Ravi Shankar's signature style. The music grows and grows on you with each hearing. Interestingly, as you ruminate on the meaning of the chants, you suddenly want to read the whole piece from which extracts are presented in this collection - which is precisely what the aim of putting this together was. Well, it worked with me!

I saw Ravi Shankar as a young college student on a tour to our college promoting culture and music among youth - he is still at it with gusto, inspiration and sublime creativity.

This is a fantastic album. I'd give it ten stars out of 5. It was done years before the yoga/chant albums you can get now. Listening to it you can hear where modern artists got their inspiration. But this is still the very best kirtan bhajan album there is. Thanks George Harrison and Ravi Shankar!
