Chants of a Lifetime offers an intimate collection of stories, teachings, and insights from Krishna Das, who has been called “the chant master of American yoga” by the New York Times. Since 1994, the sound of his voice singing traditional Indian chants with a Western flavor has brought the spiritual experience of chanting to audiences all over the world. He has previously shared some of his spiritual journey through talks and workshops, but now he offers a unique book-and-CD combination that explores his fascinating path and creates an opportunity for just about anyone to experience chanting in a unique and special way.

Chants of a Lifetime includes photos from Krishna Das’s years in India and also from his life as a kirtan leader—and the CD that is offered exclusively in the book consists of a number of “private” chanting sessions with the author. Instead of just being performances of chants for listening, the recordings make it seem as if Krishna Das himself is present for a one-on-one chanting session. The idea is for the listener to explore his or her own practice of chanting and develop a deepening connection with the entire chanting experience.

About the Author

In the winter of 1968, Krishna Das met spiritual seeker Ram Dass and was enthralled by the stories of his recent trip to India, where he met the legendary guru Neem Karoli Baba. Soon thereafter, he left behind his dreams of being a rock ’n’ roll star and was on his way to India to meet this remarkable Being. In the three years he spent there with Neem Karoli Baba, Krishna Das’s heart was drawn to the practice of Bhakti Yoga—the yoga of devotion—and especially to the practice of kirtan (chanting the Divine Names).

Krishna Das returned to the United States and, as he continued chanting, developed his signature style, fusing traditional kirtan structure with Western harmonic and rhythmic sensibilities. He travels the world, leading call-and-response kirtans and sharing this deep, experiential practice with thousands of people.

How did a sassy Jewish man from New York come to such simplicity and sweetness?

This is Krishna Das' story, his experiences of longing, hope, loss, frustration, love, encouragement - the whole process each of us experiences on our way to opening to our true Self. He shares his raw heart and suffering, his joy and companions, the influences that have led him through his life. And he has shared his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, with such shivering awe and sharpness of vision you can't help falling under Baba's spell yourself.

Krishna Das has keen insights into Reality, and yet he comes off as a regular Joe, struggling as we all struggle, experiencing ups and downs as we all do. I've read hundreds of spiritually edifying books over the last 40 years. I never before read one that led me to greater understanding while giving the sense that he is right where I am, now. It's hard to explain. This book is a triumph of love.

Full-Disclosure - Last month I interviewed Krishna Das for our Inspire Nation Show.

Krishna Das, KD for short, is one of the most inspiring people I've met, because he's had to work through the muck and the mire, and he's made it through...AND dedicated his life to others through his Guru, his work, and his music. His is not an easy tale, as you'll see, but there are powerful lessons for all of us through his struggles.

And the music he's both through by connecting to something greater than himself, is beyond special. If you've ever heard music at a yoga class, or attended a kiertan, then you've been influenced by his work. There's a reason he's called the 'Rock Star' of Yoga by the Grammy Awards.

This is a beautiful book, and if you like his music, you will love the story.

I play Harmonium and lead chants myself and always have had a tremendous respect for Krishna Das. I found Chants of a Lifetime to be a deeply personal autobiographical account of a young man named Jeffery who went to India in his early 20s and came back to America as Krishna Das after a life transforming 2 1/2 years with legendary guru Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaji).

Krishna Das shares in fascinating detail and great candor both his struggles and setbacks as well as the moments of grace and ecstasy. His accounts of Maharaji are mesmerizing and serve as a springboard for conveying many profound truths of the path to God-Realization.

A word of warning to those just looking for a book about chanting by a chant master: this work is more about the spiritual journey and context of one of America's greatest Chantmasters than just a book about chanting. Having said that, Krishna Das exquisitely conveys what went into making him what he is today, which is a result of a life-long pursuit of the path of Bhakti, or Divine Love.

As a wonderful bonus, the book comes with a CD filled with some wonderful chants.

Personally, I could hardly put the book down and consider it a great read for anyone open to Eastern Spirituality and Devotional Chanting!

This book cuts right to the heart of what spiritual practice about; finding the love within us that has always been there but that we have been temporarily blinded to. Krishna Das does a beautiful job of describing his inspirational spiritual experiences and how his Guru and chanting the Names of God have opened him up. I'm tremendously grateful that I have found this book, this path, and this love. This book is exactly what I needed at this time in my life.

Incredible Reminder of Our Oneness

I just received a most spectacular book and CD. It is Chants of A Lifetime by Krishna Das, and is an account of his life in search of the heart of Love...Gold as he calls it. The book is compelling in so many ways, and for those of us who lived through the incredible 60s and 70s, it is a true reminder of the opening in those years to our spiritual longing. Things changed after that, but in those years, there was a heartfelt innocence to our yearning for connection to God, Source, Presence, Universe...whatever you want to call it.

Krishna Das chronicles his journey through meeting Ram Das in New Hampshire, and then on to India where he found his heart in teacher, Maharaj-ji. He explains the process, the true meaning of a guru, and brings in exquisite poems of Rumi and Kagore as well as others that point us to the heart of the great mystery - Oneness and the ways in which we each find our path to the source of our heart's true desire...reunion.

This is a biographical journey, but also a spiritual teaching for the reader. In addition, for those of you familiar with his moving chants, the CD provides a wonderful backdrop of his musical prayers. I am so moved by this book that I'm taking the rest of the day to read it, and I haven't done that with a book in a long, long time.

If you feel the need for imagery that stills the mind and opens the heart, give yourself the gift of this incredible book!

I could only imagine what a blessed soul Krishna Das is, having been around evolved souls like KK, KC, Ma, Siddhi Ma, and of course, being always guided by his Guru Neem Karoli Baba! His gratitude can be felt throughout the book. Thanks to Krishna Das for sharing his journey of healing his broken heart. This is very much needed today especially there are a million things just waiting around to break our hearts.

Krishna Das shares his beautiful journey back to the light within himself, a journey many of us are looking for. This book is choc full of insight, spiritual truths and the lesson that we were never lost just blind. I loved it so much I am including it in my spiritual book group. I hope they love it as much as I do. Already rereading it!
