Stunning look at the endlessly fascinating Manson saga

Tom O’Neill and Dan Pieppenbring, have written a gripping narrative that, to use the well-worn phrase, I could not put down. It reads, at times, as good as a well-paced fiction thriller. A quick summary: reporter Tom O’Neill gets an assignment in 1999 to cover the 30th anniversary of the infamous 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders committed by Charles Manson and members of his Family. O’Neill, while looking into the famous Helter Skelter trials led by righteous prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, starts to notice some glaring mistakes, weird details, and odd and unexplained events, that seem more than just understandable human error. From there, he descends into an endless rabbit hole that consumes his life for the next 20+ years.

What does he discover? I will not spoil the journey of reading this fascinating book, but I will remark that what is hinted at is very disturbing. One thing that surprised me is that Vincent Bugliosi, who will be forever linked to Manson, seems to have been a very shady and abusive man.

The book asks a lot of very unsettling questions about famous people and the US government. Here’s just a few:

Was the CIA involved with Manson? Was he involved in MKULTRA operations?
The above question, if yes, I wonder what else MKULTRA is responsible for …
How was this barely literate, short and unattractive habitual offender able to control his numerous followers with such intense occult-like power?
Just how many of the rich and famous Hollywood royalty fell under his spell (In my opinion; a lot did)? And why? Was it drugs and sex? The occult?
What was on the mysterious video tapes found in Polanski’s Cielo Drive home?
Did the murders happen the way we have been led to believe?
How many other murders were committed by the Family?

And on and on …

My last point: You will meet several curious people in this book. Here are three that I found the most interesting:

Reeve Whitson: a very shadowy (CIA?) almost occult-like figure who seems to pop up at the beginning of the investigation of the murders and seems to know a lot about everything.

Terry Melcher: record producer and mover-and-shaker in 1960’s LA. The former resident of the infamous Cielo Drive home, Melcher seemed to have a much closer and longer relationship with Manson than officially presented.

Dr. Jolly West: a very curious fellow who seemed to have been deeply connected with MKULTRA. His story merits a book all its own!

It’s an enjoyable read of a fascinating (and disturbing) topic. It has since led me down the Manson rabbit hole as well … so be advised … read at your own risk.

So...

I approached this book with trepidation. I am not easily swayed by conspiracy theorists and their (more often than not) crackpot theories. I always read such books without suspending my disbelief and usually for my own enjoyment and entertainment rather than to take up the cause. I further questioned Tom O'Neill's bona fides as he is not an investigative reporter a la Woodward or even Capote for that matter. However, once I read the book, and having been familiar with the case since reading the original Helter Skelter, Ed Sanders' The Family, Jeff Guinn's The Life and Times of Charles Manson, and numerous other books either re-hashing the case or sociological analysis of the lasting impact from other nonfiction writers and memoirs from former Family members, I have to admit O'Neil may be on to something here and there. Other reviewers have pointed out some grandiose verbiage in his prose; others point out what they see as an annoying habit of repeating himself to make his points clear; and others attack him ad hominem for daring to question the "official" explanation and history of the case and its participants.

Like many other authors and readers before him, O'Neill points out that the Helter Skelter motive is flimsy and Vince Bugliosi steamrolled the witnesses and the jury to prove it was the only motive. This is nothing new. I vaguely remember reading an interview with Bugliosi about 20-25 years after the trial and he hinted that he took a "crapshoot" with that angle, and, let's face it folks - it worked. He got his convictions. In one sense, that's all a DA is ultimately looking for. Now in this book, some interesting things come to light that maybe he tampered with witnesses, perhaps even going so far as to suborn perjury, but since he has passed away, no legal ethics committee or other form of judicial oversight is going to overturn the verdicts. Manson and Susan (Sadie) Atkins are also dead, and it's highly unlikely that Tex Watson, Patty Krenwinkel or Leslie Van Houten are ever going to be paroled (though Van Houten has been recommended twice, but denied by the governor of California both times). Even Stephen Kay, who was an assistant DA during the original trial and has campaigned against the parole of the convicted Family members ever since then, admits that a line of inquiry could be convened, but what would that accomplish in the long run.

O'Neill, for his part, never bucks the fact that Manson and his followers were guilty of their crimes, heinous as they were. He doesn't absolve anyone from blame. What he does do, is present an argument that there were cover-ups about the case both during the original investigation, the trial, and the aftermath of the murders. He proposes that the Hollywood elite have taken some sort of vow/code of silence and no one speaks of the case or of even having ever met, let alone hung out with, Charlie in those final years of what is probably the most tumultuous decade in American history. He has uncovered questions about why a federal parolee could wander up and down the California between the Bay Area and Los Angeles without raising red flags. He has found links between the seamier side of the Southern California lifestyle and FBI/CIA operations to infiltrate and disrupt the "counterculture" of the anti-war movement specifically, and the general unrest related to civil rights and student demonstrations.

Where O'Neill falls a bit flat in his argument is that he is so easy to dismiss Manson as an "career criminal with a lack of formal education who couldn't possibly persuade others to do his bidding." This is the mistake everyone makes with Charles Manson: they UNDERESTIMATE him. You see a short man with long, unkempt hair and beard, denim shirts and jeans, and mocassins and you immediately think "hippie." When he opens his mouth to speak, you hear an Appalachian drawl (Manson was raised in West Virginia near the Ohio border) and one immediately stereotypes as an uneducated hillbilly -- Manson was by his own admission barely literate, but some of his surviving handwriting exemplars on letters and notes show a man capable of putting down thoughts to paper, albeit in a deliberate scrawl. And then there's the explosive temper and the "crazy Charlie" act. I've heard a lot of people refer to Manson as "insane." Charles Manson was many things, but "insane" was not one of them. His "crazy Charlie" act was exactly that: an act, a show to unsettle others into thinking he was nuts. Charlie learned from many other career criminals how to run a con. He even took a Dale Carnegie course offered by one of the federal prisons he was incarcerated in. He learned to read (very slowly) but was well versed in the Bible and (as it's well know), read Hubbard's Dianetics and Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, or had parts read to him, both of which helped to formulate his philosophies. Combine that with a natural, charismatic personality and you have someone who could easily lead others and eventually use programming techniques/informal brainwashing to have them carry out your orders. It's not that far-fetched and yet O'Neill keeps running into people who can't understand how a "nobody" like Manson could do what the CIA and other government agencies could not when it came to controlling his disciples.

In the end, O'Neil chalks it up to the zeitgeist of the 60's, the general isolation of the rich and famous not wanting to elicit more scandal than necessary, and the general refusal of law enforcement agencies to admit they were a bit remiss in initial investigations and for obvious reasons, no one from a district attorney's office is going to admit to any wrongdoing for fear of a mass upheaval in overturned convictions.

So...what's the takeaway?

To paraphrase, or rather upend, Neil Young (one of the few surviving celebrities from the ear willing to discuss the case), perhaps it's better to "fade away instead of burning out."

I certainly have read about the Manson Murders and had not given it much thought till this book came along. The insidious nature of the CIA and FBI I believe is pertinent for this Global Awakening Time in history today in 2022. The lies, manipulation, corruption carried out at the behest of those who are supposed to have the peoples interests at the forefront just shows the lengths they will go to, to control society. I have no doubt in my mind that the brainwashing techniques enacted by Manson on his followers were also used on him and he was a troubled youth who really had no parental love or guidance and the so-called law enforcers are implicit in so many ways it makes your head spin. We are ruled by corporate GREED and the greed and power struggles are sickening in today's society as it was way back then. There is no civilised society were lies, manipulation and the almighty greed of those in power rule the day. Well done Tom for sticking with it, I can see how hard that must have been but also to compel you moving forward, you did the best you could. Lets pray the real truth is revealed and the average joe begins to understand the full manipulation that is used on entire nations today.

Starts interestingly, then falters, then falls flat completely.

Promises a lot but nothing new. Questions like why did a music producer claim to have only two meetings with Charlie when he was seen at four? The answer is either a wide ranging conspiracy involving the CIA, or the fact that nobody in their right mind wanted to admit having been associated with Charlie Manson any more than they had to when asked about him in the 70s.

MK-ULTRA and all that are dragged in to try to revive the corpse of this book but to no avail, yes Bugliosi was inaccurate in places, perhaps even self-servingly dishonest in his account, but this book is simply poor stuff and genuinely adds nothing.

It seems to have taken the author 10 years to write or something, chap could have built a 1/10 scale model of the Mayflower out of matchsticks in that time which would have been more worthwhile.

Don't waste ya hard earned shekels boys and girls.

I am not a fan of crime novels, but i was recommended to read this one as the unfolding investigation provided a backdrop around ‘the swinging sixties’, and the perceived threat that the peace movement posed to the establishment in the midst of the Vietnam war.
The book is long, maybe to justify the decades of research going into it. The first half illustrates that the infamous Charles Manson, far from being an outlier, was one of many self-styled messiah characters who mingled liberally with Hollywood’s elite, including a close relationship with some of the Beach Boys.
The author’s investigative journalism uncovers more questions than answers, especially as numerous links are exposed to covert CIA operations in San Francisco during the hippy period.
Most surprising for me was the drawing out of similarities between the ‘psychedelic brainwashing’ techniques used by Manson to programmme his followers into committing the murders of Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife Sharon Tate and others, and those researched by the CIA under covert operation MK Ultra. More so when the same people crop up in the Manson investigation and that conspiracy, for which the head of the CIA was censured and sacked.
I learned so much about the political factors and forces at play during the swinging sixties from this book, and how a surface of ‘flower power’ and psychedelic music hid much darker forces at play.
A great piece of journalism which I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about this most interesting period of history.

A work of ‘ifs, buts and maybes’

Tom O’Neill opens with declaring that he’s not a conspiracy theorist, then launches into a cavalcade of conspiracy theories. He presents a volume of ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but absolutely no ‘proof’. His contempt for Vincent Bugliosi is toe-curling. But, it’s Bugliosi’s coat-tails he’s hanging onto. It’s interesting that this book appears only after Bugliosi’s passing - I suppose that’s one way of avoiding a defamation lawsuit. The biggest problem facing the ‘Manson conspiracy theorists’ is this - not one of them can answer this question - why would Watson, Krenwinkel and Van Houten still be sitting in jail for 50 years if there was another story to tell - ie ‘the truth’...? Bugliosi probably embellished the ‘Helter Skelter’ theory, but essentially that’s what happened. It was a hugely complicated case with dozens of players. Hardly any of them told the same story twice. But, the general consensus from the ‘family’ members supports Bugliosi’s claims - Watson, Atkins, Krenwinkel, Van Houten, Share, Lake, Davis, Good, Fromme et al. The only one who doesn’t, is Manson himself. Although, he’s come perilously close to admitting it on several occasions.
I wasted a couple of weeks reading this book - there’s nothing of any value in it - it’s fantasy. If you want the definitive account of what happened, buy Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi.

This book greatly contributes to clarifying the missing piece in the Manson puzzle - his being mind-controlled or mind-manipulated. Whether it was an experiment gone wrong, or an experiment that reached its purpose, remains the unanswered question.
In terms of proof, it gets as good as it can ever get - bar an official admission; but the age of congressional committees that managed to extract admissions seems long gone. And Manson died without revealing anything in this connection - not that I would believe he was necessarily aware what was going on with and around him.
So - great research. I could not put the book down - read it in one (long) sitting.
Chapeau bas to the author for bearing through those long 'conversations' with Bugliosi - not too surprising, there are other books revealing his less than innocent role in the case - but it must have been hard to just sit through the pompousness and diatribes.
I only regret that this book was not out by the time Peter Levenda finalized his Secret Forces -- it would have been a great contribution.

I'm actually re-reading this because there is so much to take in. Tom O'Neill shows admirable restraint when it comes to speculating but asks many of the questions begged by some of the revelatory information he uncovered. Given the lengths both law-enforcement (federal and state) and intelligence agencies seem to have gone to dispose of evidence and records, it's safe to say these revelations are the tip of an iceberg. No question but that Manson was part of an 'in the wild', long term experiment in the use of drugs and brainwashing (and it seems to me that Manson MUST have been trained/instructed by someone in this "art"). I didn't find the book drags too often, O'Niell is a competent enough wordsmith (and witty enough) to make it quite pleasurable to read (seems to have been well proof-read), and the narrative is coherent enough that you can go back to it after a day or two and immediately remember where you were when you put it down. The vital information missing from most of the other publications available (not least the "seminal" Helter Skelter by the utterly dishonest and self-serving prosecutor, VIncent Bugliosi) about the Tate/LaBianca (and other) killing have allowed a completely bogus myth to form around Manson and the entire 'ziegeist' of late-60's LA and California. I found this book dove-tails interestingly with 'Black Dahlia Avenger' by Steve Hodel, which also concerns a number of 'unsolved' murders of women in LA during the immediate post-war years (IOW only 20 years before the Manson killings) and 'expedient' criminality within the LA justice system and police.
