I went with a half mask 'cause a Balaclava seemed a bit much for me; this is my third winter at Bagram Air Field, in Afghanistan and about 5k ft above sea level in the foothills of the Himalayas, wind chill can make you feel exposed if not properly protected.

I chose the half mask for my needs 'cause I have a trapper hat to cover the top and didn't want to have to deal with wrestling to put a ninja mask/hood on each time I'll be outside. I work night shift, so I experience the coldest temperatures of the day and the wind has been pretty bad this year, first year I've seen wind turn the entire surface of snow into ice where there is lots of travel; guess it's the warm soles of boots melting the surface upon contact and the wind comes along to cure the result into polished ice.

Anyway, this half mask is pretty great--it's reasonably affordable, it smells kinda funny upon first wear but that's not what matters. It's very elastic, it stretches to conform but firmly tries to maintain its dimensions. So you can expect a snug fit. I've tried it once already, and it stays in place without falling down due to its elastic clutch.

I tried out the mesh breather gate (not sure what else to call it) but it breathes pretty well, it's a two-way street though, you'll get some cold air coming in, but with the right balance of inhaling via nose and exhaling through the mouth, I think you could find a rather comfortable process for maintaing warmth on the face and keeping the mask free of condensate. Smart to make that area more breathable. I like the half mask 'cause you can wear it off the face, just around the neck for warmth just around that area and it's practical to store it there but when necessary, just comfortably pull it up over the face.

I bought this apparel for jogging in the colder climate of Kansas City, MO. It is a continuous piece of material, so does not have any velcro on the back or anything. It has adequate extension for me down the neck to go under a shirt a little, but it does not extend upwards enough to cover the ears. It has a mesh type of material around the mouth with does accumulate a little condensation.

I used this gaiter all winter (2013-2014) while blowing snow in sub-freezing temperatures. I used to wear a bulky face mask but no more. This fits down over my head and protects my cheeks, nose, chin and neck. Extremely comfortable to wear and warm in every temperature I saw in Michigan - including subzero. No amount of biting wind or blowing snow penetrated this gaiter. Combined with goggles and hat, I was fully protected. Lightweight fleece, it was easy to wear.

I wouldn't face another winter with snow, wind, and deadly temperatures without one.

Best facemask yet.

Although the "face" portion seems to be proportioned for an 11-year-old girl, the gaiter is long enough. The breathing fabric, though awkwardly positioned for either nose or mouth but certainly not both or even decidedly one of the other, works well to both block wind and resist moisture accumulation.

The best things about this product are the "ear-hooks" it features - just little flaps of fabric that keep the entire thing from slipping down.

Its comfy and iv gone for a run with it and it stayed secure and in place however i have a big head so maybe in your case get a smaller size. Overall im stoked with it.

I bought the small/med size, it would fit around my neck perfectly but I can't pull it over my face. If I pulled the sides up to my ears, my eyes would be covered by the front. There's no mesh around the nose area so it makes it incredibly difficult to breath. The shape of the mask does not seem to work around the nose, my nose would be squished down which makes it uncomfortable to wear. I've been using it as a neck guard and it works perfectly for that. I suggested this item to a friend who complained about the winter weather, he bought the large/x-large and also felt it was too small.

The quality is okay. Mine is ripped already on the outer mask seem. It does keep me VERY warm. I've tested it in -30F windchill in Wisconsin and no complaints as far as warmth. I love that it is longer and I can tuck it under my hoodie.

Cons: I HATE the fact you can't breathe out of your nose. I use this for biking and try to breathe through my nose only, but it is very hard to do unless I push it up more. I am asian and naturally have a flatter nose with hardly any nose bridge so that may be part of the reason. As much as I love the warmth, I can't suggest this as an activity where you wish to breathe from your nose a lot.

Would I still buy one, I would say yes. The price is on point and if I'm just messing with my car outside, walking, or shoveling snow then it is a great buy.

This product does exactly what I expected it to do. I bike to and from work every day in the city and needed something to protect my face from the cold wind. I have used it for a few days now and can say that it doesn't slide down your face and it keeps the cold wind away. The only thing I would change would be to extend the fabric on the sides to cover my ears. Since the mask rests on your nose and doesn't block your vision it is not high enough to cover your ears. This product was only meant to protect your face and neck though so it is not like they failed to deliver in that aspect. Overall 4/5, I hope that as I continue to wear it every day it won't stretch out and start to fall off my face.
