Lets just say that if I could afford the $800+ price for new Weber I would do it in a second, but since I couldn't I read LOT's of reviews! I settled on this Char-Broil 4-burner unit for $199. According to most of the reviews the thing I am most worried about is how it will hold up to rusting in the rain and humidity (North Carolina near the beach). But I figured at this price point if I can get 3-4 years out of it that will be acceptable and I bought a really nice cover that is listed with the BBQ.
On to my review...I ordered it on a Wednesday and true to Amazon Prime, it showed up on Friday (box was a little beat up). The first chance I had to put it together was on a Sunday morning before football, so I allotted 2.5 hours as some reviews said (not sure why people get mad or downgrade their review on the fact they have to assemble it...not the BBQs fault). I started my stopwatch as I cut the bands on the box then got to work. Everything in the box was well padded and in its correct place with zero scratches or dents (A+ on packaging). Proceeded to assemble my shinny BBQ in 1:15:27 on my own, all you need is a screwdriver and some common sense (I followed the directions). A lot of people in their reviews complained on how lots of the screw holes did not line up and they had to bend/pry the metal pieces to get them to fit....Recommendation #1 is DO NOT TIGHTEN everything as you go along! I found it very easy to put together several steps in a row in the instruction book and then go back and tighten the screws after I had all the pieces lined up. Everything fits just fine with zero gaps or bent pieces. Recommendation #2, try not to over tighten the screw to the point where you are chipping the paint, don't need to be a gorilla. Recommendation #3, unless you have a large wingspan and are relatively strong, have a partner help you put the main grill on the frame.
On to cooking. After the grill was set up and propane hooked up I fired up the grill and let it run on hi for 20 minutes to burn off all the oils or whatever, then let it cool. Next step was a raw onion cut in half, smeared the halves on the grates and set them on the top shelf, and fired it up for another 20 minutes to break in the BBQ (smelled yummy!). I noticed some people had trouble getting the grill up to I high heat due to a gap in the back of the BBQ, but even on a 55 degree day mine got up to 650+ with no problem. Cooked my chicken breasts and tri-tip at the same time and they turned out amazing! Was very happy with the results.
Now, this is the part why I explain only four stars. I put my grill on my back deck up against the wall because this spot makes the most sense and fits my layout perfectly (still covered by my roof too). Only problem with this setup is the fact that it is in a corner and the only access to the propane tank and grease trap is around the back of the BBQ since the front does not open. This means I have to actually move it to accomplish this. Not a big deal you say since how often do you have to change the propane tank? Not much I will admit BUT, you also have to access the grease trap is from the back of the BBQ. And since this grease trap is smaller then my pinky nail, this is going to be a problem! I will have to hang a something else to catch the grease (maybe one of those cheap turkey tins).
Overall I am pleased with my purchase and I thought this review might help some other people with their decision. I have only had it for a week now but have already used it four times. I will update this in a couple months to let you know if anything has changed - Josh
Overall, this is a good quality stainless grill for a very good price. I would highly recommend!
